Too true. I can see Marty McFly with a dash of Avatar / steam-punk mixed in. Makes sense. Glad you don't find it rude when someone says "This looks like..."
I still see your unique talent in this work. If it is Marty it is an excellent "griffinator" stylized version of Marty that would work well in a Back to the Future cartoon or game.
Oh I'm sure most of my inspiration isΒ from other's art or photos. Not sure I can say many of my works are original if any at all. The ideas do come to me when I'm NOT looking at other's art, but if I think hard enough, I'm sure I can find elements in each of my works from one or more other works (and some photos) I have seen in the past.
I can actually give you two DA links to images that inspired my "Food Chain" mermaid image. I will not stuff the links here as I would find it rude plastering other art on your gallery comments. The only original thing I can claim is that I try to do a drastically different perspective. If interested I can note you the links.

I don't get too hung up on it - everything's going to be influenced by something but I never really set out to replicate another character or image. It's quite weird, though, when someone say's "this totally looks like *some character*" and I have to google to see who they're even talking about

I so understand. I have had two people say my "food chain mermaid" reminded them of some documentary that "proved" mermaids were real and really aliens..and that they looked just like how I drew mine. I just assumed if they were real they would be like most any other aquatic animal. No noticeable hair and skin like a dolphin as they are probably mammal.
