My theory is that he can't touch the wall because he's helping himself up, not someone else.

The reason he can touch the ground is probably because he died touching it.... (just my theory)

No, he can't. When they first met, he jumped at the gazelle but couldn't touch him, so the gazelle ended up talking to him since there was no threat.
