you can play a free version at minecraft.net , but its not the same as the game you buy, its alot more awesome xD. Its not very expensive either, you can buy it at the same site.

yes you make an account, and im sure you can play it on diffrent comps as long as you download it ^^, you can also play it online on the site when logged in

What exactly is the point of the game though? Everyone seems to enjoy it, so I think I would, but I just don't get exactly /what/ the game is

Its actually alot of things at the same time. but mainly you mine things, and build new things out of it. theres a lot of neat things to collect, and its exciting to dig around because you never know what will come. Everything is randomized so you can bumb into great landscapes and funny shapes.
And building diffrent things is alot of fun. its just hard to explain, you should ask a friend who bought it if you could try it or something
