I think that's the G3 rainbow dash you're thinking of.
she didn't "become" a pegasus though, the worlds are completely different. lauren faust, the creator of friendship is magic, was originally going to have fyre fly in the show instead of rainbow dash (she was a pink pegasus from the first my little pony), but because of copyright issues she decided to use rainbow dash instead, giving her wings and basically making her like fyre fly, just with a different body.

Hmmm I still have some of the original movies before they started getting more facial expressions and I don't remember fyre fly so it must have been 2nd version shows I was watching but I loved it so much back then I was ubsessed with it

Actually Fyre Fly is from the first tv special "Midnight Castle". You know the one from the 80s.
Also G4 is a reboot. Is no surprise personality and design changed a lot.
