Description
Partly this is just me having some fun - I've been working my way up to this one for ages, and I finally just decided what the hell? So here he is, the baddest of badass alien hunters ever, the late/great Stan Winston's finest creation and one of the only fictional creatures to have ever out-intimidated Schwarzenegger ...I'm super pleased with this one, too. For a while I toyed with the idea of portraying "The Wolf" from AVP: Requiem (contrary to general opinion I quite enjoyed that, and the main Predator was totally like the Samuel L Jackson of his species ...), but in the end I decided to just go right back to the start, because of course I fell in geeky love with this character right from the original movie. Hence the classic Kevin Peter Hall take.

Really cool. Yeah I liked Predator right from the get-go. I was too young to legally watch it, but it was great anyways. Now that I'm older, I see derivative (there's that word again) aspects of it, such as Rambo and other Vietnam stuff, but you know what? SCREW THE DISSING about that! This is a great movie.
But on the other hand I see the logistical head-scratching others have pointed out. For one, why is the Predator taking trophies from apparently easy prey? Shouldn't he be more like "Hardly a challenge."? But I enjoy the whole survival horror aspect of this film, anyways, how their hunter is hiding out in plain sight. Apparently there are several scenes where the Predator is visible but the cinematography does not blatantly elude to that fact. I dunno, a classic without a doubt. The sequel was good, but it loses the same survival horror element taking place in the urban jungle.

Well yeah, the original was a classic, but I am also extremely fond of the sequel too, myself. I did almost put the flying disc thing in there as well, but ultimately I think I wanted to keep the purity, so I went right with the CLASSIC look. As a result of that ... yeah, the Predators in the first AVP were a bit overdone, I though (and WAY too beefy too, bad idea to use football players rather than basketball players, really), so when they went back to the classic style hunter (the Wolf) in Requiem I was most relieved. That movie got pretty slammed but I thought it was MUCH better than the first AVP ...

I'm gonna check Requiem out one of these days. I heard it's not very good, but still superior to the original, like you said, which is comforting.
That was a gripe about the original AvP; wasted opportunity. You had three, count them, THREE bloody predators on the screen at once, instead of the usual lone wolf (no pun intended towards the next film). We could have seen a tag-team like effort, but NO, they split up, two get maimed without much effort, and then it's the same movie that we've seen like ten years ago. Oh well.

It is worth it, I think. They really played to the fans, doing everything right, and there's a huge raft of little nods and winks to both franchises' early instalments that kept my grinning all the way through. And "The Wolf" really is pretty awesome as the movie's "antihero".
I think there's still an opportunity in doing a more faithful adap of the original first volume of the AVP comic book. That was a great story, and easily adaptable I think ...

Plenty of material to work with. And the franchise can keep going, even if that means the occasional hiatus. But I'm still waiting for my small army of Predators to go after Aliens, or whatever.

That would be pretty sweet, definitely. I did read a script from YEARS AGO online once, where it was set on a jungle world rather than a desert world, but otherwise it was pretty faithful. And it was VERY GOOD INDEED.

I also read David Twohy's script for Alien 3 (he's the guy who wrote the final script for the Fugitive and went on to write/direct Pitch Black). It was the first project to use a space prison as the setting and had some REALLY interesting stuff going on with a genetically modified version of the alien ...
