Well, the best method to learn draw a tree is just drawing tree sketches based on sketches of other artists. Then you can try to make drawings based on photos and eventually from nature (but it's quite hard to transpose 3-dimensional existing object to 2-dimensional paper).

Absolutely epic. I will try this because if if the tree turns out a mess, I'll be sure to relax while I paint it thanks for sharing

Not at all! I first heard about masking fluid after about five years of painting with watercolors (and I regret I haven't used it earlier). It's a grey fluid in a small bottle that you can buy in almost every store for artists (it cost about 7$ and it's sufficient for about a year of painting). It's used to preserve some elements of a drawing from accidentally painting over them. I used it to preserve white bark texture here. When it dries up it's not fluid anymore but it changes in a kind of a gum which can be simply peel of the paper.

That's a long, humorous way of saying not to think too hard when you're painting a tree! XD
Love it; lovely tree as well.

Pardon my ignorance, but...what's masking fluid? I've never heard of it before.

I heard about masking fluid after about five years of painting with watercolors, so don't worry. It's a grey fluid in a little bottle. You can buy it in almost all stores for artists I suppose. It's used to hide some elements during painting if you want to preserve them from being accidentally painted. For example I wanted to save the bark pattern here. When masking fluid dries up it's not a "fluid" anymore. It reminds a chewing gum, but it's much easier to peel of the masking fluid than the chewing gum. I hope I managed to answer your question

not so useful, or easy. and I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or offensive. >_>

GrimDreamArt In reply to er49563 [2013-03-28 08:29:22 +0000 UTC]
I'm neither sarcastic nor offensive. This method is almost like putting stamps. When you use a shaving brush for painting leaves, you just put the brush to paper and an interesting pattern appear by itself. When you paint a bark with worn, old brush with hard bristles, it leaves the pattern similar to natural tree bark with just one brush stroke. So you don't have to think how leaves or bark really look like. Other steps (with using salt for example) are similar.
Personally I found this method very useful when I had to make illustrations with lots of trees under high time pressure so I decided to share my ideas with others. It saved me a lot of time and effort. Obviously I didn't try to show that I'm "oh so talented" and I don't even need to think when I'm painting. Lots of people also considered this tutorial as a way to chill out during using watercolors and turn off thinking for a while. My intention was to make people less aware of using watercolors (especially for background elements) and show them something that I found useful for myself. I'm sorry to read your comment especially that many people understood this tutorial properly.

I understand the tutorial, but I think a great amount of natural or otherwise gained talent is required to turn off ones brain while painting trees, and you make it seem easy. I have tried.
