Oo I love this!
So pretty final image too.
May I ask, I've never heard of using salt before, where did you put it on the image, what's it for?

Thank you! Everyone ask me about the salt. I guess I should have been more precise with the description
So here's an explanation:
I put it on the image when the paint was stil wet. Salt absorbs water from the paint and leaves a texture similar to white frost or mold on the wall. You can see it on the tree bark but it's better visible on the column from this illustration [link]

Just a question, how big is the original? It's a little hard to imagine those massive brushes like that old shaving brush on a small piece of paper .
It's nice texture you've created though, did you just use watercolour paper to do it on? Or did you do it on something thicker? Pen can also make awesome trees very sketchy.

The original is 42x56 cm (about 17"x22,5"). It was painted on a watercolor paper indeed

Ah nice work with those brushes. I would be so scared to do fine detail with a large brush XD!

Thanks! And by the way about the salt, is it just regular table salt? And exactly effect is it supposed to have on the paint?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
GrimDreamArt In reply to inspiroid [2013-03-27 10:44:37 +0000 UTC]
It's absolutely normal, regular salt (though I discovered that bigger grains give more visible effect). In general when you put salt on a wet paint, it absorbs water from the paint and leaves a texture similar to white frost. It's quite well visible on the column from this picture [link]

I know that you know many rules by heart. You've learned them and now you use them intuitively. For most people it aquires a lot! of thinking to achieve something like your "simple quick sketch". A lot of feeling for colour mixture is needed to get the tones right and so on... I really like your work and I generally like your tutorials aswell. I just think it a bit rude on those guys with a lower skilllevel to have those "thinking icons".

That was obviously not my intention.

I know. So I thought I'd better point it out. Some people are so advanced that certain things are very easy for them. Others struggle very hard to achieve something that turnes out not even half as beautiful. That's just in the nature of things. But those who struggle will find it very hard to read that doing some awsome work like your tree requires no thinking at all....

wow I saw your original artwork before the tutorial and had no idea you used masking fluid and salt. it's cool how you use a few untraditional techniques for it

Ahem, another question... sorry to bother you.
I'm thinking about the masking fluid, if is used properly, seems to be usefull. But I've never used it before, so, you, what brend do you use?

GrimDreamArt In reply to Juro89 [2013-02-24 19:24:23 +0000 UTC]
For several years I was avoiding masking fluid but when I finally decided to use it I discovered that it can be very useful indeed.I use "Talens Liquid Masking Film" - the only masking fluid I can purchase from my favourite online shop
