Me too. Using tools makes the drawing too technical, and not really art.

love your tutorial! hey what's the function of salt???

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrimDreamArt In reply to titus-studio [2012-04-28 14:17:04 +0000 UTC]

I used salt to make textures (on the sky mostly). Salt absorbs water from the wet paint and leaves a characteristic pattern. After the paint dries salt can be easily removed.

1001G In reply to ??? [2010-12-04 23:28:48 +0000 UTC]

so you mixed the salt with anything....what does the salt do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GrimDreamArt In reply to 1001G [2010-12-06 16:53:09 +0000 UTC]

I dropped the salt on a chosen part of work when watercolors were still wet (for example on the sky). It leaves a very nice texture (after whole painting dries up) because grains of salt absorb water with a paint. A few grains should suffice.

This is great! I almost never draw buildings, simply because I find it difficult and often boring, but this tutorial - combined with the rest of your gallery - has inspired me to keep practicing how to draw architecture. After all, there are no limits to what wonderful buildings you can create if you just know a few basic things.

Thank you for sharing this, you are very talented artist and architect (I sure hope that is what you are going to work as, if it's not already your profession. The world needs more of the kind of houses you draw!)

Thank you for the comment! I used to think that drawing buildings was boring but now I see how fascinating it can be. I'd be happy if my works encouraged someone to draw architecture

Awesome of you to put this out there. Countless people really struggle when putting architectural elements in their work. I love the precise geometric detail you show in your under drawing.

As for the "watercolor" element of the tutorial, I found it hilarious that you described the method of painting the sky as putting "mixed colors in quite accidental way." I'm sure you didn't mean for it to sound like that, but because of your word choice (accidental) you make it sound like you have no idea what you're doing! You want people to think you've mastered the media (why else would they care about your tutorial). Next time I'd advise replacing the word "accidental" with "spontaneous." The technical term for this sort of painting is called using "automatic paint" (when you put the colors down and they sort of paint themselves) -- also, the particular technique you use is referred to "dropping color wet on wet" or "charging."

Great little tutorial though. I love to see these architectural drawings.
