You know, I try to make the characters more emotive and wild in my drawings. Unlike Hanna-Barbera in the eighties, where they mostly had to trace poses from model sheets.

Good choice. Though I've kept Greedy's look given by HB - as you know, he and Chef are distinct Smurfs - whenever I draw Smurfs I've tried to make them a bit alike to Peyo's vintage style; with some exceptions (eg Jeroen De Coninck - bluebuddies.com/cgi-bin/ultima…), some actual Smurf artists have been depicting them with rounder heads. Agreed. 'Cause in the original comics, Greedy is a food thief and Chef is a separate character.
The two were combined to be both a food thief and a cook in the H-B cartoon, into one village chef, Greedy Smurf.

But I must confess that I didn't understant very well the reason why they're trying to help Brainy... So they're convincing him to ignore Gargamel's and other witches and sorcerers' pursuit? Couldn't this be dangerous? Besides, any Smurf is subject to danger standing face to face with an evildoer.

No, no, I don't think so; just because I really hadn't understood it well; in my opinion you can take a good advantage. As we see, Brainy doesn't seem impressed by their attitudes, finding them two goofs and probably might start lecturing them as he usually does.

But instead of tossing him out of the village like normal as a response to his nagging, Costello brings out pictures of his family to show Brainy (which gets him to stop lecturing them).

Costello Smurf: Do you really think it's smurfy what we've been doing? The Smurfs seem to be nice guys and we were welcomed in Smurf village... I don't feel right doing all that... I'm a baaaaaad lil' Smurf!
Abbott Smurf: You know pretty well we must do as Gargamel says, or else... (he does a throat-slitting gesture)
