Description
Todd Lasance as Julius Caesar in Spartacus: War of the damnedI expierience HUGE troubles in getting darker shades, especially if there is a lot of dark places on a picture. So I tried to experiment with some different pencils. I don't get dark enough with graphite somehow, so I took coloured pencils, oil- and waterbased. This got me a nice shade, but there is no way I found out of getting it really smooth...... And if light fals onto it, parts reflect much more than others thanks to the graphite.... At least I see some improvement in taking a picture of the drawing ^^
I still like this very much, but that could just be because I'm a rather huge fangirl... ^^
So if you have any tipps on getting a smooth dark layer that blends in well, you're welcome......
Graphite pencils, Black Faber Castel Prismacolour and Pitt series soft and extra soft, kneaded eraser, pencil eraser and lots of frustration on A2 hahnemühle nostalgie Paper

This piece is beautiful, I don't feel it would be fair for me to give any critique on how to smoother out the pencil and lines because I have little to no experience with that as an artist.
Also, I looked up who Todd Lasance is, because I am not familiar. I think I may have even found the reference image you used.
A few things I see are:
His Jaw Line, Todd Lasances actual Jawline appears to be longer. Maybe it is sue to shading that it appears that way, and maybe actual length but it changed the structure of his face in the drawing.
Secondly, there appears to be some sort of a lighting reflection on his left shoulder front of the vest or maybe it is just lighter in color due to the pressure/pencil used but it looks so different from the texture on the right shoulder and I keep looking at it.
Overall the Hair is the most exquisite detail of this piece. It's natural and the texture of each type of hair is dynamic and natural. I feel like making the choice to reproduce this in a gray scale with pencil added so much difficulty. There is a lot of texture here so I can imagine how hard it was to even things out and still give everything a realistic feeling.
I wish I could be of more help but your work far exceeds mine!! I enjoy this piece, It doesn't need much improvement IMO

This is totally stunning, you did an awesome work with the anatomy proportions of the face, it even looks like black&white photography!
I love how you put a lot of attention and hard work to every detail
awesome work, keep it up

You are incredible, the way you draw the textures looks unreal! You've really mastered drawing hair, as well. I know how hard that is, when I do realistic drawings, that's what takes me the longest.

Hello! You asked me to review your art in my forum thread, so let's get started
This is an absolutely stunning piece!
I have honestly sat here for over five minutes looking for something to say that wasn't just praising the skill and attention to detail and everything gorgeous about this... I ended up finding two very tiny, nit picky things.
And those are that the hair on the left side of his face (where the light is coming from) could have some more defined shadows to give more depth and a fuller look, and that the highlight in his visible eye could be a touch brighter to help contrast the shadows (so you wouldn't have to darken them and possibly have it wash out the pupil).
But that's it, and like I said I am nit picking to the utmost degree.
You have amazing skill and I hope you keep up the marvelous work

It looks amazing, just like bw photograph. The only thing is that the upper lip could maybe be a bit bigger. Apart from that it's awesome

it's really great job !!
I appreciate many shades of gray that come perfectly illuminate and shade the drawing !
There are also no problems proportions ! Maybe his pendenfit is not perfectly round and can be on the hair is a bit light in shadows at times.
Otherwise I agree ! Its a good job!

Why am I being reminded so much of HALF THE MAN I USED TO BE from the Stone Temple Pilots right now? (Anyway, absolutely fantastic portrait as always)

I was shocked, I thought it was a photograph at first xD
Excellent work on capturing his realism as well as the dramatic lighting. You even managed to get the details of his beard correctly <3

Haven't seen Spartacus before but it looks very convincing o.0
I like the level of realistic detail you did. The lighting is solid, the jaw area has convincing hair follicles, the hair looks very natural and the materials of hi s outfit also look convincing.
Now, THAT said, I see a few areas where it could use work. I'm not sure if his eyes are supposed to have bags under them but if they aren't then I think you should tone it down. It makes him look older than what he is and almost resembles a black eye in a way. The lower line of the upper lip has too strong rim lighting I think and could use some toning down or be erased. In addition is Caesar supposed to have lost his ears or something? If not then I think you should draw them in, but keep them hidden behind the hair particles.
Overall though pretty solid job

This is really amazing, I agree with J-cody with using charcoal, it can get really dark, though sometimes it can be a little hard to erase. The details in this is super spot on! God I can only imagine how long it took for you to do this! Super great!

It wasn't that long, just about a week during holidays.
Yes, charcoal can get dark, but I very much dislike touching the stuff at all, so I hoped for finding another solution....

So this is haunting. The way he looks at me makes me a little bit nervous. I'm not involved in this fandom so I have no idea what its about but still.
There are so many things I like about this piece that it is ridiculous. From the texture of the clothing, to the background, to the hair, to the skin...it is an amazing piece. You mentioned not being able to get dark enough...have you tried charcoal? I recently got into working with it and have started to combined it with graphite pencils to get that extra dark something. It seems to absorb the light so you don't have to worry about reflection. You do have to use a fixative on it once the work is complete so it doesn't spread like glitter.

Thank you very much for all the nice stuff you said
Yes, I tried charcoal in the past as a single medium, but I get sick using it... The feel in the paper is like chalk back in school to me and my teeth start hurting, I get goosebumbs and my stomage starts revolting... I have no idea why that is, but it makes me a bit afraid of charcoal. That, and I'm not sure how charcoal would work over pencil, I fear it won't hold very well...
I already use fixation on my pencils, they're messy enoght for having leaned THAT XD

That's why I have to use charcoal pencils and blend with q-tips. I dislike the feel of charcoal under my fingers. I've watched a few tutorials on youtube where a woman uses paint brushes of assorted sizes and the amount of details she is able to put into a piece is astounding.

This is amazing work, although I personally do not like the extreme close-up approach you took. The hair and beard is particularly well done. I just wish I could see the top of his head, and a little more of his body.
I am afraid I cannot advise you on your technique, as I am used to drawing in a cute and colorful cartoony style that bears almost no resemblance to this.
What is "Spartacus: War of the damned"?

No problem, but this is based of a photo, and that is the same close-up XD I mostly chose the reference because of big dark parts and because I wanted to find out how to get that dark XD
Spartacus is a TV-Series (rather bloody one...), and this is the last season.

I recognised him immediately, especially that defiant gaze. This looks gritty, so your troubles are well worth it given Caesar's condition here. Love the textures, especially the armor. I suck at clothes.
I was so glad when the feckless psycho Tiberius (sp?) got killed. I knew Caesar and his father's mistress would have a hand in it, even though Caesar didn't want him killed at that point (if I remember rightly).

XD Always nice to find someone who seems to like the show. Most people I know don't say so aloud XD (I find out when their kids, my students, ask me what that stuff is about that their mothers watch while they're at school..... ^^)
Jep, I understand that feeling, I had the same. And if I remember correctly, Tiberius' life was the only garant for Caesar's own life at that moment XD
Thanks a lot for the nice comment, btw

I can understand why people don't admit it, there's so much gore, porn and swearing in it. I had to change channels sometimes.
Tiberius was undone the moment his friend got beaten to death. I could not watch that. His father, for all his world wisdom and smarts, was a brute. Caesar was the son Crassus should have had; he would not have underestimated Spartacus.
Anyhow, you did Caesar justice.
