He was a science-fiction and horror writer from the early 1900's. Alot of his stories dealt with people losing their minds when they are faced with unspeakably alien beings which prove the human race has no influence or even common ground with the universe at large.

Pretty simple composition, but the rendering on it is great. The mid ground looks detailed enough to be a matte painting, if it isn't.
