FINALLY DONE HAHAHAHA
Hunter and Warlock class vs Crota from Destiny.
Birthday gift for a friend.

So my friend requested me to do a drawing for our one friend of both their Destiny characters facing off against Crota. He brought the idea up in the summer a couple months before my friends birthday. ....just finished it two days ago ORZ (LOL). A couple of things got in the way during the process. First was drawing a Chirstmas card (something I do every year) and following that working on cosplays for an anime convention. Glad it's done and glad to have another night time scene drawing in my collection. Personal best for longest time working on a drawing (maybe 40hrs).

The process:

So starting off I got my friend to take screen shots of the two characters along with the background the characters would be interacting with (in this case closer to posing). This is the first time drawing something sci-fi. I was looking forward to the challenge of diving into something new out of my comfort zone. I also have very little experience with night scenes so getting the opportunity to work on that was a great experience. When I started sketching this out, I realized I had no experience drawing characters purely from back view. I took some time, along with a few pages out of my sketch book to practice back poses. Following this I sketched out the background with the characters in place to see how it would all fit together.

The background is my favourite part of this drawing. I looked forward to the challenge of a complicated background with low light sources (minus the moon). I started off by breaking the background down into simple shapes and adding more details and line work on top. After sketching out the BG I added the warlock and hunter. Drawing their clothing was another new experience (not use to sci-fi themes). Last but not least I added Crota. From the get go I knew the boss monster would be my biggest challenge. Making ominous, evil creatures is not my forte and something I need to work on.

COLOURING. My god, I murdered a lot of colouring pencils finishing this thing. >__< This is now my second drawing where I started colouring the background first and finishing it off with the characters. I felt with a night scene it would be best to get the background done first and have a good reference for how dark I wanted the characters. I love the colour scene of the BG, from the lighting of the moon to the dark shadows in the boss lair.
I feel as though certain parts of the hunter and warlock could have been less saturated and have more hints of the night scene in the clothing. Hardest part with the clothing was the damn patterns in the cape... drew it in with white ink. Crota was the hardest to colour T__T. When I finished colouring Crota, I realized something else could have been done to make the glow effect more ominous. I wish I could change the mountains and have more of the building wall behind Crota. Looking at references of him, Crota had the building wall behind him that was blackish-green and very plain to bring out the skeletal look of Crota. Now I have a complicated skeletal glowing monster with a busy mountain background that takes away from Crota standing out.

All in all, I am very proud to add this to my collection. Something different in my portfolio for sure. Huge learning curve with a lot of experiences gained. As always, enjoy~
