Description Final Fantasy. I coulda done an extensive review on 10 or 9, and talked how amazing those worlds are, and what could be better. But I decided to play up from the beginning of the series, at least from three, the lowest available on Steam, and after playing it for awhile, I decided to share my thoughts, by copy/pasting my review from there.

This is a bad game, and not because of the major glitches that have apparently gone years without being fixed.

To start, the story is mega boring. Your four characters have zero personality to speak of, and characters drive a story. Wait, what story? There isn't one. Your four heroes are given that role because reasons, and that's it. You travel from town to town where bad things inexplicably happen. FPS games have better stories.

The job system has some major flaws. First, the "transition" encounters when you switch jobs is just...pointless. It's not really an issue, but it's also unnecessary. More importantly, most of the jobs are worthless. Warriors are bad because Red Mages are just as strong and can also cast spells. Scholars are Red Mages without physical attacks. Evokers are bad because the effect you get is random. Monks and White Mages are fine, but are completely outclassed by later jobs, making you basically start over leveling just to get the same effects. The Thief sucks because stealing is garbage in this game; I have yet to steal something that isn't a potion. But you're gonna be grinding anyway, because you're gonna need so much gear, and you're not gonna get the money elsewhere.

The caster jobs don't have MP, they have spell numbers. Similar to spells per day in D&D, there are spell levels, and you get a certain amount of each level. Again, bad system. Think about a black mage. He'll have access to two Thundara spells, and that's it. In a boss fight, he then becomes useless, because his lower level spells do hardly anything. Same thing for healers. Oh, and don't even bother with "well, just use an ether" because those don't exist in this game. Once you're out of spells (those very limited spells), you're screwed until you rest.

Combat is straight up stupid. Early in the game, it forces you into combat while under the effects of Mini, twice, once against a boss. This means your physical attacks do nothing and you HAVE to have magic jobs leveled up and spells prepared. If you don't, you're screwed. Good luck. But in general, combat is really bad. Two main reasons. One, turn order. Is. Completely. Totally. Random. There is no speed stat to determine who goes first, there isn't even a class thing that says the quick jobs go first. Going into combat with the same monsters over and over with the same jobs, I saw every single combination of turn order. This makes it really hard to react to things, like healing. Makes boss fights unfair. Second, physical attacks in this game are just as random. You have a chance of hitting a certain amount of times. This, again, is completely random, and physical damage varies way too big.

I've played a lot of Final Fantasy games. I did not find anything redeeming about this one.

Shields are useless. You do better equipping two weapons and doubling up your potential damage. But that gets expensive, so expect to grind for the good weapons.

Oh yeah, I didn't have a shield on anyone, because the defense it granted seemed inconsequential too.

Shields are that bad, yes. Just dual-wield all classes. Even mages.
