I don't see how they can dispel a demon that isn't there to begin with. Does Lucy conjure up a demon, then kill it?

To be fair, Luke/Lucy's magic so far has worked on a 'I just kind of think about it and it happens' principle. See: Floating pizza, clothing transformations, and makeup.
But it would probably help if she had an idea what she was actually doing.
