Happiness. Most took it for granted. You probably took it for granted. I did, too.
Feeling happy is a beautiful thing to feel. You feel like there is a huge ball of sun projecting from your heart. You feel as if nothing can stop you, and you'll do anything to try.
But the happiness never stays. It never does. And when it leaves, you feel like that sun has burned out, leaving only a few smoldering embers. Embers that remind you of your past happiness, and makes you yearn for it.
That's how I feel here. I suppose that's how all of us feel. After all, who could be happy, with what we have to go through?
The Hunger Games. The food shortages. Watching people die on TV in brutal, unbearable ways. The Reaping.
I used to be happy. A happy little girl, playing with her younger siblings. But I didn't know what goes on every year. The Hunger Games. Not to mention how little food we get. I don't think I've ever been truly full in my whole life. But I try to stay strong, for my sisters. If they see me scared, they'll be just as frightened.
All my sisters are happy, too. Or they will be. When they are told of what happens each year, they'll never be truly happy again. And that is why I hate the Capitol, for taking away all the happiness in the world, and making it dark and forbidding. But we're lucky, some children don't even live to know. If you could call it lucky. See, sometimes I think it'd be easier to be dead, where nothing can hurt you anymore. T
I wish I could help my family, get extra food for them somehow. But I'd be dead on the ground before I even could get an apple.
That's what we have to live through here. One wrong move, and you're publicly executed by the Peacekeepers. Why they're called Peacekeepers, we'll never know, because they are the farthest thing from peace. Whipping people for taking apples and making us work the orchards 'till our finger bleed.
That's not what I call peaceful.
I don't normally hate people. Most people are nice to me and my five younger siblings. But I hate the Peacekeepers. And all of the people from the Capitol, because they love seeing us die each year, while they stuff their faces with mouthwatering food. The only thing that gets me through the days is music. The Sweet music that comes from the Mockingjays can ease all of your problems and fears, and they almost fade away.
