I was looking at ~kyoht 's work at her page and saw a tutorial on how she makes her work, so I decided to try it out!Though there's loads to improve on, I think it's an okay start.
Oddly enough, this pic looks better in person than this scan; I think it picked up too much on the texture of the Bristol board.

Has anyone who is not into mythic animals seen that and told you "Hey, nice bird!"?
I get that sometimes when I draw the heads of gryphons and gryphon-type animals. It gets annoying.
By the way... do true gryphons have the ears of lions or the ears of horses? This one has lion ears... I've seen them with both. I get kind of nervous when I try to draw or give a literary description of a traditional gryphon because of some of the conflicting things I've read on them... worry that I will not get it right.
I love gryphons, too... but I tend to draw my own weird, made up "gryph-races" ... other types of feline/avian combos. One of my first Deviant Art postings was a dove/horse gryphon-type/not-true-gryphon that I drew.

Well, I've never encountered such a comment on DA, but yep, I've heard that from people in real life... -__- I guess they're just oblivious to the big ears popping out of the back of the head.
In all honesty, I'm not quite sure what kinds of ears a traditional gryph is supposed to have.
Anyway, sometimes the most interesting characters are made by deviating from the norm (eagle/lion mix). Have fun with it! And thanks for your comment

Over on my website, I have some art of my own grphyon-type combos... I created 4 diffrent gryph races for my fantasy novel... (Valerian the Paxzyf being the last member of a 5th race I newly made up to maybe go in a sequel). I think people's favorite is my "Pengryf". It's a... penguin/lion combo. Yep. They don't fly... their wings are flippers like penguins'. They swim.
