Description April 18, 2015 was Member's Appreciation Day at Wolf Park.  It was a beautiful day out and full of fun, with little extras for members to enjoy.  This is a shot of the main pack made up of (in order) Kanti, Bicho, and Fiona.  And yes, I can tell the "Butterscotch Boys" apart now!
Wolves gather like this in what is called a rally.  Hence, the name of the photo.   I'm not too creative with names.

Shot through fencing.

Location:  Wolf Park, Battleground, IN
No reproductions of any kind please.

All comments are deeply appreciated!!!  Thanks!

Ah yes. I see now that you do.  I just looked at your gallery.  I was going to ask if you had ever visited Wolf Park but I see that that isn't possible for you being that you live overseas.  Have you ever seen a wolf?  I couldn't really tell.  I have a lot of wolves in my gallery.  Not all are in my Wolf Park folder.  I'm not too good at putting my work into folders. So feel free to browse and find my darlings; some of them no longer with us now.

No, I haven't visited Wolf Park, nor the USA, but I did see wolves here in Hungary at the ZOO of Nyíregyháza (my hometown). There are also wolves in the Bear Farm of Veresegyháza, but I haven't visited it yet.
Thanks, I'll check.
(Btw, I'd really like to visit Wolf Park, or some nice national parks of Canada & USA.)

Ah, Wolf Park would love to have you!!!!  I've had the pleasure of meeting a fellow DA member from Germany there.  It was lovely to meet him in person and spend the day learning from him! And the USA West just has a beauty that cannot be beat!  I am so glad to hear that you've at least been able to see your favorite animal in your zoos.  I thought that they were there.  I know that there are several spots with wolves in Germany.  Wolf Park is unique in that one has the opportunity to actually be in with the wolves.  The photo on my home page was actually shot by a fellow seminar participant who was from Switzerland.  I didn't even know her name.....sadly.  I would love to give her credit for the outstanding shot, which means so much to me.

It's a lovely photo indeed.

If I ever get the money, I'll definitely visit Wolf Park.
Until then I'll take a look at the wolves of Veresegyháza, like one of my Hungarian dA friends did:

Thank you for the links!  I enjoyed those photos very much indeed.  It's quite a different experience than that at Wolf Park.  I watched a video posted of her encounter.  At Wolf Park, you go through a 2 hour seminar of training about wolves and wolf behavior so that you learn to "read" wolves and you learn how to properly interact with a wolf.  These wolves live as a pack (remember they are research subjects), so there are what I call wolfie "rules of etiquette"  that must be obeyed.  Interaction with the wolves is solely their choice and even then, within proper guidelines, so that the wolves do not perceive any movements as aggressive.  We are entering their home and we are their guests.   So some of what I saw on her video would not happen at Wolf Park....ever.  However, at Wolf Park, you get a broader view of wolf behavior and interaction than I saw in her video.
The bottom line is: any interaction with a wolf is awesome!  No matter where it is!

It'd be a special experience indeed to make interaction with them. (...and then look in their eyes Just kidding.)
I'd really like to take a visit there and go through the process.
(Didn't mention it but I'm planning to write a book, a special sci-fi featuring wolves, so meeting them in reality would have a huge effect on it.)

You should also consider visiting Yellowstone National Park. At Wolf Park, there is a guarantee you will see wolves. At Yellowstone National Park, you probably will not see wolves, but if you do they will be in their natural habitat and Yellowstone has some really cool features that our little Hoosier State cannot give you. Yellowstone is the area that our wild wolves are doing the best. I don't believe that we have any wild wolves east of the Mississippi.
With that being said, if you do want to travel America, I'd say Glacier is much prettier than Yellowstone as far as mountain scenery goes, but then if you want mountain scenery I figure the Alps are closer to you anyway. It's also comparably close to Yellowstone, but not really. The Olympic Peninsula in Washington is also worth taking a look into, although you will need to rent a car for that area.

Well, Glacier National Park is beautiful, considering the pictures found on Google and it's also really close to Jasper National Park of Canada (which is that kind of magnificent as well) but the Alps are indeed closer to me.
Oh, I'd really like to visit them overseas. Maybe once I'll have the chance.

I just got back from visiting Rocky Mountain National Park. It's sad to see the destruction of trees caused by the pine beetle, (which was native to the area, it was just a bad epidemic this time around) but it was still beautiful.

I might have to check out Jasper National Park sometime. I do have my passport. Hmm.

Indeed it would!!!!  I don't think it would be complete without a face to face meeting!

Yes, just kidding indeed!  You can look into their eyes but only briefly!!!  Long engaging looks are interpreted by them as a challenge.  You are definitely taught not to engage their eyes or gaze.

Beautiful picture. Been years since I went to Wolf Park (was a birthday treat when I was a teen), so I don't recognize these wolves, but they're still amazing.

These are Dharma's offspring, if you are familiar with Dharma.  The father is Wolfgang.

They ARE fascinating, David!!!!  The rally sometimes ends in a howling session; this one did not.  These are siblings remember.  But pack members normally rally together, siblings or not.  It's a bonding.

Okavanga In reply to Guard-of-the-Citadel [2015-04-22 06:15:18 +0000 UTC]

Fascinating, Cynthia. I suppose the howling sessions are not just bonding, but also a proclamation in that the wolves are announcing their presence to the locality.

Great Stuff

I didn't really get the best photo of her this way, but I really liked this photo of Fiona when I went to the Open House. The fact she was just looking at the camera really took my breath away.

I didn't know you actually got to go!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!

Yes, Fi is quite captivating, isn't she?  That is a good shot!  The fencing is very hard to shoot through!

I didn't get to go that day, but when I saw the numbers....I knew it was okay that I wasn't there!

Well, we went when it opened, and there was a line when we got there, but it didn't take us too long to get in, but already the parking was crowded. By the time we left though the lines were backed up to the road and not moving.

I have to say I am not a people person and my encounter with me a rude folk almost, almost ruined my day. It didn't though, thankfully!

What?  Someone was rude to you?  A staff member?

No. I was clearly shooting photos when this guy says to his family basically, "Come here, stand right here, everyone get over here." They were feeding the wolves...and the family got all got RIGHT in front of me. -____-

Oh......so sorry.....try being only 5 ft short (I can't even say tall; that word doesn't apply).  Everyone and their brother gets in front of you.....

I had an "incident" a couple of years ago at the State Fair similar to this...with children.  I had arrived early for a special event to photograph and had been told by the DNA people putting on the show exactly where to be to get good photos.  I sat down and close to show time I was swamped by little kids, all in my field of view.  So I got up from my coveted spot and retreated to stand a few paces back thinking this would allow me to shoot above the sweet darlings, but no....now they all crowded further up and stood up instead of sitting down.  Mind you, I was like you with a big camera and obviously there to take photos plus I arrived early but that didn't matter.  Now the little dears were all in my field of vision.  After a while, I approached one little dear and placed my hand lightly on her shoulder and asked if she could sit or move slightly to the right; I don't remember which.  What I do remember is the angry Mom who descended on me at the conclusion of the program with a finger in my face telling me: "Don't you EVER touch my child!!!"  Every since THAT day, I stay far away from the little darlings no matter what!

Yeah, parents don't control their kids and get mad when you are just trying to help.

Also, I'm 5'3", so not that much of a difference from you.
