Smaller cats will do this as well, Cynthia - I always thought that it was an aid to transpiration. There again the cat may be tasting the atmosphere to aid smell.

I managed a few cheetah shots a couple of years ago, but these guys were to intent on hunting and surveying their territory to be lolling about!

Cheers

Ah ha!  I was right!!!!  Oh how cool!!!!!

I'm sure that the zoo cheetahs would much prefer to be doing this than lolling about in the zoo!

Good thoughts about the tongue though....I hadn't thought about that!

Following up on the comments on the other shot, Cynthia, you can tell cheetah and lions are quite different in attitude as cheetah will stop and investigate if a jeeb rolls up, and they look at you. Lions never look directly at you and you just do not exist as far as a lion is concerned.

Hmmm....I can see this, David.  Just shows the different temperament of the cats, doesn't it?

A lion has no natural enemies in the wild, except other lions and Man. So, their psychology is not disturbed by jeeps etc - just other "animals" that are not worth pursuing. If someone is daft enough to leave a jeep, then the rules change, and they literally become fair game. Many trackers working in game reserves get to know the lions and the lions get to know them.

I have heard that!  Something which I find so very, very cool!  It totally shows that animals and man can have a peaceful co-existence if they treat each other with respect.

Yes, but the trackers are canny folk - they not to approach a lion when it is hunting, and to let the lion make the first "friendly" approach. Maybe, and I'm speculating here, lions realise that jeeps and trackers often find game and perhaps they use them to help hunt.

I think you're right.  The trackers definitely know what they are doing and how to approach and when to approach or more importantly when NOT to.....and it wouldn't be too hard to associate jeeps with hunting.
