Description Some sketch to show Drift design's development, from the early idea to the final concept.
First sketch was just done without too much thinking and it was quite banal.
After getting more input from Shane McCarthy, I developed it in his final form, which I think was a vast improvement

the one on the left looks like animated prowl with his samurai armor

Now that's a custom I'd like to see. A couple of Universe Cheetor's shuriken and it would be pretty cool.

One, Poochie needs to be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine. Two, whenever Poochie's not onscreen, all the other characters should be asking "Where's Poochie"? Three...

Not that I don't like a good Simpsons reference, but what?...

It's a reference to how much of a Mary Sue Drift is, just like Poochie.

Most excellent! I really can appreciate seeing the early designs and how they evolve to the final form.

The first one to the left looked so badass and cute at the same time... but too Super Robo looking for Transformers, hehe. The one in the middle is cute!!

In the end... Drift looked very slim compared to the early designs O_O

Yes, co-creator Shane McCarthy suggested me to make Drift's body frame more similar to Blurr's, and I think he nailed that.

Hehe, I figured as much. Ever since I first saw him in AHM I thought he looked a lot like Blurr, but a little more "blocky"... but that resemblance always made me wonder if Drift was also fast in both robot and vehicle mode or just average speed like any regular mech... ^^'

Yes, he was supposed to be an high-speed 'bot like Blurr - but not at Blurr's levels.

I just love the way IDW is writting his history. especially with the secret sect of non-alligned cybertronians. that way he can do things more his own way.

I agree about sketch 1 being banal. The armor looks bulky and could impair him mor than help him.

non credo che il primo design sia banale. Anzi, รจ molto G1oso, ma riesce ad avere carattere. Occhio: classico e banale sono due cose ben distinte.

Comunque รจ splendido.
L'unica che mi dice di meno รจ la seconda versione.

So do you know if we'll really get a toy of Drift?

Also, which issue will he debut in? Last I heard Josh was on his fourth issue coloring and he still hadn't seen him.

Drift will debut on issue #5
A toy? it's quite possible.

Thanks

The first design still has merit, and it would make a perfectly respectable car robot. But the other two designs rock as well.

Cool sketches. The fist design was cool but a bit unoriginal, despite how I like it. The final design however has some details I really love, specially the shoulders. That detail alone caught my attention because of its uniqueness. Great work regardless.

PS:
Asuming this is an upcoming figure, when it is due, if you're in liberty to discuss or even know.

now that I have seen this i can actually say I prefer number 1 over the final version.

to me it looks more believable than the final version too.

But I can see why the final version was chosen overall.

Love the design and armour. The one on the right is my fav, as it is sleek and fast.

I also love the design sketches, as it shows the creation and progression of a character.

CYBERBUTTERFLY [2008-08-03 00:30:22 +0000 UTC]

Your right about the design progress. The first one is nice- but a little outdated- it's a concept design you'd see created for the Gen. 1 1982 series.
The final product however, takes that design and makes it more modern- streamlining the design, and giving it a 'MTV' Flare.... Same bot- but made for the world of 2008

Man it's awesome to see the design process for the character. I'm loving the design for Drift.

I can't wait to see how Hasbro Translates it to the toy.

Thanks for posting these - it's cool to look at the development process for a character's design and see how it evolves over time, and especially nice to see Drift move from a more common TF design to one that evokes a Japanese samurai.

Plus I love behind-the-scenes stuff anyway.
