I love the Thing too, especially when you know it's Jack Kirby's alter-ego in his Fantastic Four series

A beautiful rendition of my favorite. (I just wish I could do his skin well. I draw his hide too uniformly.)

My advice: think this character in a solid black and white before coloring and don't skimp on the shadows, the black masses. For this direct coloring with watercolor I just thought about changing the shadow value by the orange value that go to the orange-blood !

Ohhhh. Top layer and anything under that "top scale" is shadowed, like scale mail armor, only more random.

The scale mail armor effect is due to the texture of the paper I used Douglas(watercolor paper I believe or for another use). It is a very nervous paper, there are many rough edges to "hang" the brush and it is quite thick too.
