Thanks, glad you liked it. As for the inspiration: I had three images open on my desktop, and when I saw them from a distance, they seemed to merge, suggesting the buildings and landscape, which I then painted. The ships evolved from a photo of a metal sculpture...

Great picture! But i have a question. I suppose this is common knowledge to everyone, but i have failed to understand exactly what makes a painting a Matte painting. Wicky P said it had something to do with movie backgrounds, but is this one?

Your question is a good one.. There is some debate in the matte painting community as to whether a painting must be used in film to qualify as a matte; this piece was done on spec as a concept. You might find this site interesting [link] ...

This piece is about 70% paint/30% photo, but virtually all areas have been overpainted... I use stock brushes, with a few tweaks in shape dynamics...
