Wow. Ok. That's a lot of favs in a day! Thank you! Now can I just bring your attention to my Favourites > BBC Sherlock folder, because there are a TON of other amazing things not made by me that are a billion times better and deserve to be looked upon and admired. No, seriously. Go look.
Update: So apparently this got on tumblr and I didn't know! No, no, it's fine. It's more than fine, it's fucking flattering there are people who want to share it. I'm not going to take out the rifle and start screaming about copyrights and shit, don't worry (I mean, if you did put the right credits). Just let me know so I can thank you, fantabulous person who is driving traffic here, lol. Cos I'm just surprised when I log in and see sudden traffic and I dunno where they're from.
Oh, and that person who reblogged it on Tumblr who said 'Is that a cab door with no corresponding cab'? Thank you for the major LOLfit I had. The picture is cropped and the hinges should be on the right side, I presume, but thanks for the imagery of Sherlock traveling Monster Inc. style via random cab doors floating in space. Heh.

Of course! Perhaps in the future? I understand though. Time consuming pieces are time consuming, but best case scenario: all the time spent is completely worth it. This is one of those best case scenarios. Here's to more best case scenarios for you! Not that you'll need much luck when you're this talented.

you flatter me, they don't all pay off, but then that's a risk to take, isn't it? it's just sometimes it's a sad feeling when you invest time into something and it simply didn't work out. i'm as glad as you are this one did

Maybe not all of them but most of them, I'd wager. ;]
It's true, starting a new drawing/painting is always risk, but I suppose one could argue that it's a risk that pretty much always worth it. Even if the result isn't great, the experience can be a valuable learning experience at the very least. One botched piece means one less botched piece in the future? Though it is quite depressing when you make that one mistake from which there is no return when you're so close to the end... or when your drawing seems to be permanently stuck in that initial awkward phase.

That's the beauty of DA - you don't have to air your failures if you don't want to
It's true, some mistakes can be beautiful, maybe a stroke here or there, or even a likeness that isn't 100% accurate can give a piece its personality. I don't know how to explain it, but it allows the artist to project... things... rather than being a total copy. Not to take away the skill and patience one needs to produce a great photorealistic piece. If I could have it both ways I'd be so happy! The kind of mistake that gives me the greatest headache/heartache is the one that just never seems to work no matter how I try. I guess it's the 'awkward phrase' thing you were talking about... those that never look right no matter what you do... it doesn't just come down to a stroke, the whole thing looks off. Usually I just scrap them and start over, or move on to something else.

Right, it's nice to be able to just put your best foot forward and keep all the stumbles and screw ups that led up to the the better pieces for yourself.
I completely understand what you're saying and agree wholeheartedly. "Mistakes", whether intentional or not, can sometimes really bring that a piece to the next level, take a piece from being a little more than a copy to something more creative/original, something with personal flair. That's why I admire illustrations so much. I love how they're able to achieve a likeness even with plenty of their own personal flair/style to spare.
Ah yes, the "forever awkward" mistake is a real pain. I usually try to work at it because I'm stubborn, but after a little while even my patience wears thin.

Especially illustrations that preserve likeness and put characters in settings otherwise not in canon! I wish I could do that...

Saaaaame. That'd be too amazing. Or even the ability to caricature would be great. I've always been fascinated by how effortless caricaturists make portraiture look.

yes! i think it's so great how they're able to exaggerate facial features in such extreme ways and yet make them so recognisable. if i ever meet one, i'm going to ask them how they do it!

My illustration teacher showed us this video of a caricaturing contest of sorts, and it was mind-boggling just how quickly the caricaturists could draw people. I'd love to know as well.

This is so awesome hey how do you make the graphite look black like charcoal? mine just looks gray and pale so i don't upload a lot of pencil work
π: 0 β©: 1
gunneos In reply to karaskarasface [2012-09-08 08:23:08 +0000 UTC]
oh, i want to know too. sorry to disappoint, but my own solution is photoshop (which always makes me feel like i'm cheating, but i HATE graphite shine so bad).
i usually play around with curves, levels, brightness/contrast, shadows/highlights and sometimes colour correction, since my scanner tends to add either a pinkish or yellowish tint to stuff. not always successful imo, but better than looking gray and pale.
i also take photos sometimes, but that is a hit or a miss, depending on lighting conditions. most times i finish my drawings at night, and can't wait to get it on dA, so i just take the shots under a pathetic 15V energy-saving lightbulb >.>
