Well... ever seen a flat chested mermaid? They must use all that extra space for something. I figured big lungs like dolphins or manatees.

Don't some of them carve combs from shells or bones and entangle ships in their hair? Maybe that was a modern fantasy tale.

Exaggerated limbs seem like pretty standard creature modification starting points.
