Description Not anotomically accurate, but I think it looks pretty cool
From a big square of Japanese foil paper (60x60cm roughly). The front claws came from 2 corners of the square, hind most appendeges from the rest 2 corners, the middle appendages from the center of paper, making them the thickest. The head and mandible from one raw edge while the antennae from the center of paper. I am too lazy to draw the creasing pattern

Comments and suggestion to improve the overall look of the model are welcomed!

I've never seen an oragami praying mantis before. How original, how unique. How did you get the idea to do this one? I like how slender the legs are, and the front-view of the head - it looks so real! Femals spiders also usually eat the male after mating (that is, unless the male can get away fast enough ).

Never? When I fold one out of tissue foil (my American foil one is crappy) I'll put up some pics. It's not as good as this one, but it works.

my favourite insect!! and it's quite well reproduced, considering the complexity of the origami. i'd love to have the creasing pattern for this one, even tho I don't think I'll make it (anytime soon).

praying mantis's are one of the few insects that i think are actually pretty. you've done a good job on portraying one here. again, amazing origami work. i kind of like that it's a bright red. makes it look more festive.

Thank you , I like this one and the butterfly in my insect design, but this mantis has a really thick front appendages, need to fix that later

this is spectacular!
it looks very anatomically correct to me.
it has a very mantis-like stance/pose.
that intense red paper would be very good if you were to make a lobster.

OH MY BOB! That is so incredibly awesome!!! just so awesome! and realistic. it looks like u grabbed a prayin' Mantis, painted it red, shined it up with glossy paint, and then called it origami. great job!

Kth-dragon [2005-05-26 03:34:29 +0000 UTC]

This has to be one of the most interesting insect origami designs I've seen. It's quite lifelike, if not completely literally accurate. The antennae look really thick in profile, but I'm not sure there's really anything you can do about that... on the whole, though, it looks really good. Maybe you could make the next one green like the real thing? That'd look neat, and maybe some people would think it was a photo of a real mantis. -..^

guspath In reply to Kth-dragon [2005-05-27 12:10:49 +0000 UTC]

The femal mantis don't eat always do you know this? I read this in a book, the femal eat the male is she have hungry, but if not she don't. Anyway! I like this little art! I see the others also, very nice!

guspath In reply to Sombros [2005-05-07 08:34:33 +0000 UTC]

Ic... I always thought she eat the male all the time. Thank's for the info and the comment

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

cloudkitten In reply to guspath [2005-05-11 02:51:41 +0000 UTC]

the female only eats the male during the act of mating, because bizarrely, the male can't ejactulate with his head attached. I guess it's just practical to eat the headless body.

I won't go into the mating practices of some bees, as that's almost more stomach wrenching, ^_^;;

guspath In reply to EggFreak [2005-03-17 10:37:02 +0000 UTC]

Thank's very much for the comments
The paper is folded then painted, that is why it is shiny, because I picked up the wrong paint, I meant to use flat red
Actually in this model, I try to make it look seamless, simple looking, but to achieve that there are lots of work to be done mostly by repetitive sinking up and down the paper to make the whole model thin and slender

EggFreak In reply to guspath [2005-03-20 10:03:52 +0000 UTC]

^^ You're welcome
O...folded then painted ^^ Oooo, heehee, wrong paint But it still looks nice I'd probably say that it looks nicer than a flat red ^^" I dunno, my opinion =]
*nods* It does looks simple looking O_O" Despite all the confusing work you did inside it O_O It must take ages to make one model O_O" lol =] Wooooow ^^ I love your origami skills *hugs*

=_=" Then I wonder what I am then if you're models are average XD XD XD ^^ *pats* You're very good =]

guspath In reply to EggFreak [2005-03-21 12:09:14 +0000 UTC]

Hm.. I dunno also haha... I can simply paint flat red above the shinny one but I prefer to leave it like that ... scare to ruin the already ok model

Thank's very nice of you , I really am not that good in origami, if you seen some origami work from Japanese master you'll find my models very average

Hmm... why all the good stuff come from Japan, anime, origami...

Finally we get to see your avatar!

I like it a lot, specially the fact that you've managed to make it really slim, just like the real one. the medium legs must have been a bit diffult to fold due to their thickness at that point...
