The treaty of Pläswitz was signed on the 5th of August 1813. It was between the French Empire, its allies and the Sixth coalition. It was proposed by Austrian diplomat Klemens von Metternich after the retreat of the Coalitions armies into Silesia after the battle of Bautzen and was a momentous peace as all the great powers of Europe were present at the congress.

Napoleon had declined several truces before this and his acceptance came as a surprise to many. It was agreed that during a nine-week period of negotiations would open between Napoleon and the Sixth coalition.

During the nine-week period Metternich brought forth some key terms. They were as follows: 1. Napoleon would return the Illyrian provinces to Austria, 2. Poland would be repartitioned between Prussia, Russia and Austria, 3. The Confederation of the Rhine would be dismantled.

Napoleon, seeing the disarray in his army caused by his previous en masse conscription and the critical lack of cavalry in his army - most of which had been lost in Russia - agreed to the treaty.

Austria’s goal was to have a weakened France, but not one which was unable to stand on its own. This was because she wanted France and Russia to counterbalance each other. This balance became known as the concert of Europe. Alexander I of Russia was opposed to this, as he wanted to capture Paris as revenge for the burning of Moscow. Eventually he was coerced by the rest of the coalition and the idea was signed into existence on the 5th of August 1813.
