I understand where you are coming from and dont think poorly of you at all. Its not something that everyone will understand and people dont seem to realize that.

we all need to do our best and then do better. thats all im trying to put across. every single person on the planet deserves the right to be happy and to have love in their lives, and the people who say otherwise need to update their processors so to speak.

thank you for the kind post.

It's part of human nature, same as gangsters called themselves and each other "nigga" or "dawg" to downplay when uppity people called them "NiXXer" or "dog". Or how about when goths, skaters, and such began calling themselves "freaks." They'd do it so it wouldn't hurt as much when others said the same remark in a hateful manner. I can respect your opinion, but you must recognize it for what it is, an opinion, one that is different from others in the same community. This person probably uses this as a coping mechanism, as is human nature.
My lesbian sister-in-law named my car the "fag-mobile" because of all my GLBT bumper stickers. I have a very close gay friend who calls himself a "gayjun" because he's gay and cajun. So you can't say the entire community thinks the way you do.
You shouldn't have called this person a poser because they use a coping mechanism that you disagree with for your personal reasons. You can't speak for an entire community.

I'll confess, I don't know much about the GBL- part of the community. But I know plenty about the T part.

Short of Drag Queens, who I have the greatest amount of respect for, transgenders want to be invisible. That's what I take offense to, because gutterface is making us out to be something we're not. And people see this, and they think that's what transgenders are. It's not really fair to us to be repersented by such a puffed up person

If gutterface transitions, I'll eat my hat.

boxofslavery In reply to Aurion2 [2010-10-21 23:09:41 +0000 UTC]

Your opinion doesn't represent ALL Transgenders, as this artist and so many others have proven. If you want to represent the community in a different light, go do so. No one is stopping you, and I doubt Gutterface would criticize you as you have.

I'm not objecting to you personally not wanting to use the word, but it seems to me like there's significant debate from people who are serious about gender/sexual identity issues as to whether it is appropriate or not. [link] For example, the National Gay & Lesbian Journalist Association says that whether it is offensive or not depends on who says it or how it's said; "Tranny: Often a pejorative term for a transgender person, it is now being reclaimed by some transgender people. Caution: still extremely offensive when used as an epithet and should be avoided except in quotes or as someone’s self-identified term." (emphasis mine)

You make it sound like everybody with a vested interest in sexual and gender identity rights thinks the same way, but from what I've seen, that's far from the truth.

Again, I'm not objecting to you yourself not wanting to use the term, or not wanting to have other people identify you by it. If someone walked up to you and said, "Hey tranny," I would back you up when you asked them to stop. I would do that for anyone who didn't like the terms being used to identify them. It's your right to ask that of me.

But if =gutterface wishes to self-identify as a 'tranny' then there is a precedent for that from people are who serious about gender identity. If your entire argument rests on the notion that the entire community is against it and besides, the people who use words like that aren't really serious about their identity ("typical Mall Goth type"), then your argument is shaky at best. It's also based partially on ostracism. How much would you like it if someone told you that your objection to the word 'tranny' made you a stick-in-the-mud, unvisionary, and not a part of the serious gender identity community (or not part of the community at all)? Not much, I'd guess. Do I need to go on, or do you get the point.

boxofslavery In reply to Aurion2 [2010-10-21 23:38:38 +0000 UTC]

You seem to keep missing the point I've made over and over again:
That is your opinion, and not Gutter's.
You don't get to speak for an entire community.
You are not "more" transgender than Gutter.
You are not "real" and he is not "fake."
You don't get to decide that.
You are being just as judgmental and bigoted as the people we're fighting.
And yes, as someone that although heterosexual WAS born as the wrong gender, I DO have the right to speak in this matter, and agree with Gutter. And as a 30-yr-old, I fit your personal criteria for someone that should be allowed to make that decision.
Your opinion doesn't match the entire community, or even a vast majority from what I've seen.

Aurion2 In reply to boxofslavery [2010-10-21 23:48:56 +0000 UTC]

Then can you honestly tell me that you want to spend your life known as a "Tranny"?

Because that seems to me like the saddest thing I can think of for any TS/TG I know, short of being forced to live in a sex that isn't theirs. See below: Sex =/= gender.

Everyone I've talked to, people who have gone to doctors, had treatments, worked at being the gender they were born as, struggled day by day, is offended by the word tranny.

As someone who is struggling with her own gender identity, I have a right to speak up and say that is wrong. Freedom of speech is a two-way street. I'll concede you have a right to believe as you wish. But you have to understand, I am entitled to my opinion, and from my observation, what is on this page is not transgenderism. It's attention-mongering, and it's misdirected.

I'll say it again. If gutter makes any movement towards correcting his/her sex, I will eat my hat/withdraw my comments.

boxofslavery In reply to Aurion2 [2010-10-22 00:08:14 +0000 UTC]

It is very expensive and difficult to change one's gender through surgery, not to mention risky. Therefore, judging someone on whether or not they did that is wrong. I have not corrected my gender, and have chosen not to. For one thing, my husband is heterosexual and I'd give anything to stay with him. I enjoy our relationship as it is a lot more than he would if I changed. He and I have discussed it logically and we think this is best for both of us. I have had some surgeries, but I won't go "all the way" because I'm happy enough with who I am. I am lucky in that I can find happiness even in the wrong body. I feel great sympathy for those who can't, and still completely understand where they're coming from. I've done all I can do to help them, as I will continue through my entire life.

Of course I don't like being called a "Tranny." But gender-wise, I'm pretty normal in appearance so I don't really get it much. It is more socially acceptable for girls to dress like guys than vice versa. But I don't like being called a "freak" or any other word like it either. Yet, we call each other that sometimes as a self-defense mechanism so that when someone hateful does call us that, the sting isn't so bad.

I'm glad you're finally admitting that what you've expressed is your opinion, rather than rant it off as if the world would be perfect if your word was law. It seems your observation is luckily rare, as most people see this as helpful and very artistic.

Aurion2 In reply to boxofslavery [2010-10-22 00:35:24 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I have stated this as my opinion. Something you seem to have failed to do.

I respect your choice, because it is hard being caught between love and gender. Trust me when I say I understand that much.

And yes, the surgerys can be expensive, but there is more to it than the surgery. Counseling, HRT, and even the way you dress and carry yourself, all contribute to "passing" as the gender you are.

Anyone who feels that they are a gender counter to their sex should be offended at being called a tranny, because it implies that they are changing genders, while in reality they are correcting a body they never should have had.

There's a difference between wanting to be male, and being male and trapped in a female body.

Homosexual is the actual term for "gays" The term "gay" started out as derogatory also. Now ACTUAL homosexuals refer to themselves as such.

I know at least 3 "tranny's" who refer to themselves AS "tranny's".

Chill out. This is for the better good.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

KMSKM In reply to evermoo94 [2010-10-21 23:00:14 +0000 UTC]

- Actually the word "Gay" used to mean "happy".

- "Trannies", not "Tranny's"

- "The better good" of the LGBT community has next to nothing to do with Deviantart or the majority of it's users. This is like the new Myspace, where kids go to be angsty and such. Also, like ~Aurion2 said, "Although, based on the content of this page, if you like her, any transexuals you know must be of the whole "FIGHT THE POWA! TRANSEXUAL FOR LIFE" variety, and they hurt us more than any other group, perhaps short of certain Christian groups."

Deviantart is not and most likely never will be the place for any kind of LGBT or government revolution because the majority of the users are just kids who honestly have no idea what they're talking about and follow people like Gutterface blindly with no clue about reality beyond their profile.

evermoo94 In reply to KMSKM [2010-10-21 23:29:08 +0000 UTC]

I know it meant happy originally. Then it became a derogatory term for homosexuals.

Sorry for spelling some shit wrong, I'm not perfect.

Yeah, I know it has nothing to do with DA, I was just trying to have this person chill out and back off kind of. For calling her a poser, I think that was rude and unnecessary.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KMSKM In reply to evermoo94 [2010-10-21 23:35:45 +0000 UTC]

Actually, "Fag/Faggot" became the derogatory word for Homosexuals, which Gutterface is wearing proudly in a picture in their gallery.

For calling Gutterface a poser? Gutterface is an adult and can handle people calling them a poser on their own.

Then I want to know what kind of transexuals they are. Although, based on the content of this page, if you like her, any transexuals you know must be of the whole "FIGHT THE POWA! TRANSEXUAL FOR LIFE" variety, and they hurt us more than any other group, perhaps short of certain Christian groups.

Transgenderism isn't a movement, it's not an attractive thing, and it's not sexuality.

TS/TGs are people who were born wrong, and they suffer for it until it is corrected. Yes, it needs more attention. But it's not something we do because we want to be differant.

For any real TS/TG, the biggest compliment you can give is to not pay attention to them at all. They want to be known as the gender they are, not a "tranny"

and they're not in your face, I'm a tranny, but they know they are such, and don't mind being referred to as a "tranny".
And they refer to themselves(amongst themselves as well) as "Tranny"'s

"I do not want to be called a trannie, I don't want to be transexual. I want to be female."

Hey--no one is asking you to self-identify as a tranny or accept it when someone else calls you a tranny. What =gutterface chooses to call himself does not force you to change your mind about what you want to be called. As far as I'm concerned, you are a woman.

But I still back up =gutterface 's right to call himself what he wants. I have a friend who was born male, and I use the name she chose for herself, Elana. I use the gender pronoun that she prefers when referring to her. She hasn't undergone surgery yet (though she's planning on it). I have another friend who was also born male who doesn't want to be called "she" until he has his surgery done. He wants to save the sweetness of that until he's fulfilled his dream. Which one is correct?

The answer is--they both are. They chose what was correct for themselves, based on their preference. To me, it would seem like it would be hateful to say, "No, I'm sorry, you don't get to call yourself what you want. I'll call you whatever I want, as well." The fact that they want to be called completely different things makes no difference here; I still honor their wishes.

I may be a teen but from what I've seen in the past few years I've turned my back on the bastard hypocrites who critize the gay community, racial differences community. When people wake up and see the world then maybe we can see change, but it will never happen. America is stuck in their own damnation and we can't do anything about it, it's really sad. I can't stand how people on this page are getting caught up in how Americans are biased and supposedly hate things that don't follow the norm.

To me, that's not what this picture is about, there is no sense of nationality or the stereotypes that go along with it. This is about acceptance and understanding. It doesn't matter where you're from, how old you are, what you do for a living or what color your hair is. There is so much hate today, between political parties and religious factions, it's ridiculous that some people can't just learn to accept that not everybody is the same.

It's not just in America, hell, it's not even mostly in America, that honestly wouldn't matter even if it was the truth. What matters is that it's a sad, sad thing to come to terms with the fact that people just simply don't grasp the concept of equality and acceptance.
