Beyond my understanding. but not my enjoyment.

this is terrible. utterly terrible. You're making me go through your beautiful gallery and I need a paper to write!
of course, there IS 12 hours left.
Anyway, great job! :3

a fun pretty little thing. I worked all the red particles over to the right side and then created a huge sunburst. woot.

Ooh o.o Very nice! Was this done in Flash 8, I guess? That's a ton of objects to have moving around the screen at once...

very cool, quite mesmerizing.
I'm doing something similar to this in Java, care to share with me what piece of trig you use to determine which direction the red particals need to go in when in the radius of the mouse?

unfortunately I dont have the source on this pc, but I can talk you through how I remembered it.
first off I used good old pythagorus theorem to get the distance between the partcile and the mouse, if that was less than about 100 pixels then it was within the field and had to be pushed some.
as for the actual moving I dont think I used any trig, just pushing the particle a fraction of the x difference horizontally and then a fraction of the y difference vertically.
the trick is just to play around with it till you get the behaviour you want

ah i see. Yeah I did something like that in a previous project where each particle had an x and y velocity which made the trig real easy. There were a few little querks i didn't like about doing that though, cant say i remember... so this time i thought I'd try using two variables; velocity and direction to accomplish the same thing. In some ways its better, in others it's just hard; wall collision for example is much harder than just negating the x or y velocity. Anyways... i was hoping you were using the velocity/direction method so i could get some hints... oh well.

I seem to find myself spending most of my time trying to trap at least one of the little red ones in a corner. It proves to be difficult

Sweet GuyFlash! You should make a tutorial on how to make this. You know how I love my particle effect flashes.

Excellent, but the rotation/scale is costly, try making round particles, and lose the rotation/scale, I think the overall FPS will jump by 3 FPS at least...
