Description movement: up, down, left, right
shooting: W, A, S, D

this is just a speedtest for the engine i'm working on, fps is in the corner so let me know how it performs for you (if it lags drop the quality down a notch)
I'm actually pretty happy with how well flash handles this many bullets (they are ALL running collision detection btw) of course the in the game the bullets will spawn in patters from the enemies so it wont be so... scary (at least not at the start )

if you are running a reasonably good pc and cant hit an average 30 fps even with lower quality please let me know ya

anyhoo, 8 directional shooting + movement

edit: ugh, putting it in browser HALVES fps... looks like this will be download only ppl

30 - 60 fps. Shooting increases fps (?). Control reminds me of "SmashTV"

This very simple and cool. I started to read your description and it said it should be running at around 30 fps on a fast computer but it stayed at a 50 in both low and high quality. But then i read more of your description and clicked download and it played on high quality at 30 fps Very nice shooter engine.

InsomniacOvrLrd [2006-10-12 03:44:52 +0000 UTC]

yo. At standard size it runs at a near constant 63FpS. I really love this. You're THIS close to havign yourself a worthy Geometry Wars Opponant here. I can't wait for the finished version.

Oh...perhaps if the arena were a tad bigger? it seems too small to really inundate you....

but that's coming from a geowarz whore X3

GuyFlash In reply to InsomniacOvrLrd [2006-10-12 09:37:24 +0000 UTC]

well it does seem that most people are getting good results with the framerate, and I've had a few pointers on how to reduce lag even more, so a bigger play area is a definate possibility

although... I've never played geometry wars

InsomniacOvrLrd In reply to GuyFlash [2006-10-12 14:47:49 +0000 UTC]

OH GOD WHY NOT?!?!?!?! Go to your nearest walmart with a 360 kiosk! (at least go online and find a video of the play) the kiosks have the game buried in them, if you can figure out where to look. Give it a play. And watch a video...becuase Geometry Wars: Retro-Evolved is ....pretty much the biggest an dmost popular 360 game /.\ but it's still really fun. (i like dead rising more...but geo wars costs $5 lol)

kormyen [2006-10-11 23:21:16 +0000 UTC]

haha. THAT is kewl as man

I really like how the engine feels so far.
Better than wh at I could do haha... *sigh*

I can handle dodging the majority of those bullets (and it kept me entertained for a while haha (until I kept ending up at the bottom of the screen...)), yes, but shooting stuff at the same.. I think its too much for my simple brain

Hmm... my computer is pretty stock (parents brought it..) in the browser it runs at about 24-26 without shooting 20-24 shooting (and getting it alot ). So yeah, even though its not the "30" you were aiming for it still runs very smooth, it doesnt appear to lag at all ^-^.

May I ask the code to show fps? :S *too lazy to google *

Infurnus [2006-10-11 22:45:19 +0000 UTC]

I get 56-58 in the highs, and 38-40 in the lows.
My only suggestion is to make the shooting 16 way via making q shoot up-left, e up-right, z down-left, and c down right, while x would shoot down, and s could be made a special fire button, or to shoot from all sides but with far less bullets. This would be an optional control setup, of course. Otherwise, very nice engine!

rockintom99 [2006-10-11 22:44:32 +0000 UTC]

Got 32-41 fps in browser at high quality.

running athlon xp 2600+ (@ 2.02 ghz) with 1 gig pc3200 ram. (for reference!)

also: the hitbox is a bit large! all crazy shooter shumps require a miniscule hitbox

also: bullets should be blinky!

soapaintnice [2006-10-11 21:51:47 +0000 UTC]

I noticed that the bullets (red dots) don't always detect a collision with the ship. This seems to occur when less than half the bullet touches the ship.

Anyway, fps never dropped below 30 for me. Everything runs really smooth. I can't wait to see what you do with the engine.

That's nice! Would make an awesome game. I got over 50 fps occasionally in the browser, and that was on the quality it starts in. (Don't know if that's high or low. )

I had nothing below 56, and it went right up to 60 several times.
I like the eight-way shooting, and then engine effects when you move.

larewenevenstar [2006-10-11 16:18:49 +0000 UTC]

between 35-45 for the engine, and also going left and right is a bit slower than forward and back. Otherwise, brilliant! ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GuyFlash In reply to larewenevenstar [2006-10-11 16:41:24 +0000 UTC]

lol *puts clever voice on* the ships is moving the same speed left and right as up and down (I double checked my code) but the stars and bullets create the illusion of moving much faster vertically
thanks for the comment though

lol, dont get me wrong, there will be lots of bullets around the player, but we save lag if there are less bullets that dont stand a chance of hitting the player

GuyFlash In reply to Elefef [2006-10-11 15:38:42 +0000 UTC]

I'll agree with you but it could make slipping through all the bullets tricky, it would be a pain to end up sliding into a bullet on your last life
