Description
I have never been more frightened and/or confused when I found out I somehow got married to Ysolda in Whiterun. All I did was give her a mammoth tusk...Well heres the short story. After completing her little task, I left Whiterun to adventure. Went to Riften and other places. Ended up getting into the quest which ends up being Sanguine's quest. But Ysolda was one of the random factors put into the quest (factors are random for everyone.)
So she talked about how I was once to be married and how I took my fiance out in the twilight of the moons and yadda yadda and that she had my ring from this supposed fiance and that she wouldn't tell the rest of the story unless I paid for the ring (2000 septims.) But somehow in all of this ramble I got married to her.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED! I FEEL MIND VIOLATED!

Poor humans, they don't realize the children of the hist are only attracted to other children of the hist. (Argonian's can only mate with other Argonians as they aren't cross species fertile.)

Β Dar-ma, Scouts-Many-Marshes, Derkeethus and Shahvee all never had a problem being attracted to non-Argonians. They even give the lover's embrace perk no matter what species you are.

Technically, argonians are asexual, they don't really need one another to bear children. Whether or not an argonian is capable of having children, is a matter of the hist itself. You see, the hist not only gives life to the argonian eggs, but chooses who it is that will bear children. It does so regardless of the argonians sex, because another strange technical fact, is that the sex of an argonian doesn't really matter. It's just something the hist added to help argonians blend in, and infiltrate the society's of men and mer. Argonians don't have to find mates, but because of the influences and traditions of other races, they have adopted these mindsets. Best example I can give you....imagine aliens with no sense of sex appeal or understanding of why it is we do anything, secretly land on earth. They wish to blend into our society, so they observe our species, and they learn why it is there is male and female. They learn of our biology, and of why there are two sexes. Both need one another for the species to thrive. To better fit in, their bodies evolve and change, so much so that they appear no different from us. This allows them to seamlessly fit into society, and take rolls based on their own preferences, becoming either man or woman in appearance. Because their species is different, they are incapable of producing offspring, because the form they've taken is simply that, just a form.Β
It's the same with argonians and the hist. Remember that the hist existed on the continent of Tamriel from the very beginning. Long before even the races of men and mer came to the continent. But when they did, the hist took precautions, and created the race of argonians, which the hist evolved from common day lizards. The hist needed to know whether these other races were a threat, or possible allies, so it shaped the argonians to a form common amongst most of the races that have made Tamriel their home.

I'll admit, some of it is conjecture, but it's also based partly in truth. Argonians really don't need one another to reproduce. How it is they lay eggs, I based off chickens, as argonians seem to also be avian, as well as amphibious, reptilian, and fish like. Also apparently part mammal, as the hist sometimes allows them to give birth to live young. Back to the chicken point, chickens can lay eggs without the need of a male rooster. These eggs are the eggs we eat for breakfast. It isn't until the rooster engages in sex with the female chicken, that the eggs become fertile. When argonians lay eggs, they set them near hatching pools by a hist tree. It's the hist that makes argonian eggs fertile. You can look it up on TES lore, the hist is what gives the argonians life. So if no males are needed to help the female fertilize her eggs, then why make them male or female at all? The answer was obvious, and even the video I gave you points it out. The argonians aren't bound to the natural laws of men and mer, but their bodies and personalities( Their souls you could even say)were designed the way the hist made them to be. For what purpose it had done so, no one really knows, but I took an educated guess on the matter by examining the facts. Another reason I say there's no need for sex between a male and female argonian is because their own biology seems inconsistent. One moment they can be male, and the next they can be female. They can't produce male or female hormones like testosterone or estrogen if there is no set sex. Meaning you can not define them by their genders, as the hist can change their bodies and personalities at any time, to better fit the argonians identity. They are also not prone to the same needs as men and mer are in Tamriel. I say that the idea of finding a mate was influenced by men and mer because argonians were at some point simply wild animals. Animals don't know love, as they have no conscious mind (no soul) to understand their own actions. Human beings were once the same, we were animals at one point in time, not concious of our own beings, but did everything out of instinct and a species natural state of mind to thrive and survive. What started the idea of finding a life long mate? Why didn't we just stick to fucking whenever and whoever without conscious thought of the other person? Why is it that we need to mate in the first place? I expect you know the answer to the last two questions, the answer first was to ensure that our genes spread out, instead of our children possibly inbreeding with their half brother or sister. We use to live in tribes, surely you know what happens if you had children with more then one spouse in such a tiny group. Anyway, that is the goal of every animal, to ensure their genes are passed on to their offspring, and so on and so forth. Not argonians though, the hist is what ensure their continual existence.

Check it out, and draw your own conclusions. But the point stands, the argonians are a people made to look and act like people. They're still my favorite race though. Their culture is definitely one I respect and admire, as they already have everything they could possibly need.

If they are asexual then why does the games give us the option to choose a gender.

Cause it'sΒ just something the hist added to helpΒ argoniansΒ blend in, and infiltrate theΒ society'sΒ of men andΒ mer. Since when do the laws of biology apply to fantasy worlds? There are crossbreeds between all sorts of widely different creatures in such RPG's. I don't see how the Elder Scrolls would be any different.

Ah, I think what happened to you is the same thing happened to me. So, you start Sam's quest and end up in the temple and have more to do to complete that quest, but since there are so many things to do in Skyrim you went back to Whiterun before doing all the other things for the quest, (like getting a goat from a giant and getting the ring back from your "fiance"). Then Ysolda talks about how you owe her money for an engagement ring and you're confused so you talk to her and then you find out you owe her 2,000 gold for a ring you never bought, am I right?
Basically, I don't think she was trying to imply that you two were married, but what she said made no sense because you ended up skipping other parts of the quest before talking to her, so the conversation came out of left field and made no sense to you. At least, that's what happened to me.
BTW, your Argonian character is cute. ;3
