Description
In my Silmarillion headcanon Elrond and Elros are of same age. Therefore, as they were adopted by Maglor just after the battle in Falas, they must have reminded both Maglor and Maedhros of their own brothers, the twins whom they had seen slain the very same day.(In my headcanon both Amrod and Amras died in the Third Kinslaying, not in Losgar, nope.)
Acrylic colours.

I like this painting, but it's so sad
I have the same thoughts. But I think later Maglor thought of them not, like his brothers. "Justifieth their clothes and comforting them when they are sad. I ... I, who thought I will never do this. I sing a lullaby at evenings, the song that I would have sung to my children ...
Maglor, broke the silence and looked out of the window. In the garden a rope stretched between two trees with drying clothes on it. Between his heavy, dark-colored clothes waved little colorful shirts, as if they wanted to fly away with the light summer wind.")

Thank you!
Yes, I also think that Elrond and Elros were never really like Maglor's own brothers. Yet they fit the role as being young ones he saw as his duty to protect and keep away from anything that might hurt him. Seeing as his young brothers now lay dead, he had to make his utmost to keep safe the children that he had now adopted.
Your comment made me sad, though. Because these two were indeed the closest to children of his own that Maglor ever had.

I had thought of this too, sometime ago... It is so sad and moving I love how you arranged the figures in the image.
You get better and better with acrylics!

Sorry not sorry. Think of this as a friendly reminder - it's supposed to hurt.
