Description
A mother dragon carefully watches over her nest as her most recent clutch of eggs hatches, ready to assist any of her children should they have any difficulty hatching. This drawing was done for my independent study art class, and I spent every available amount of time in that class for all of September and the beginning of October working on it. I'm very proud of this drawing and like it quite a lot, but I did a shoddy job piecing together the four scans that make up this version of the image. I'm going to try to get a photo of it that will hopefully be of better quality than these four scans.
Edit: Finally stitched the scans together satisfactorily.
Another Edit: Replaced the incredibly unsaturated version of this image that had been sitting here for four months with a much more color-accurate version.
Media: 95% Tria & Prismacolor marker, 3% Micron pen, and 2% white Cretacolor pastel pencil on illustration board
Size: 15x20"
Time: 18 hours

It's colored almost entirely with Tria and Prismacolor markers with a bit of white gel pen for scale highlights, and inked with various sizes of Micron pens.

What a precious scene, the most important event in all dragon life! It's so touching.

Okay now that's just plain beautiful. There's so much intricate detail work here in the scales, the background and the anatomy structure that 18 hours seem like a really short time for it. I really like the color compositions, making the eggs stand out from the rest while the dragon blends in with the background. Great job, indeed!

I really like this piece, but her back leg (the one under her tail) kind of bugs me. I don't know about it. Something about the angle. Ah well. I love the colors, how they're slightly muted, and I really like the baby in the front right corner. It's so cute!

Yeah, I spent over an hour trying to get that leg to look right and could never seem to do it. That kind of ticks me off.

I understand. I've had drawings that have done that to me. I swear artwork just has a mind of its own!

Wow, now that is a great piece. The coloring is grand, I really enjoy the analogous scheme, it works so well together especially with the brown present to break it all up. Its very warm to look at even though these are realitively cool colors, the way you presented each color makes this feel like morning and it really warms me up. The light greens especially are drastic and are very presentable. And the move from forground with the baby dragon and eggs to middle ground with the huge and elegant focal point to the background of the fantastical forest is great.

Great job there, Gwydd; your artwork never seizes to amaze me. ^.-.^
Btw, I don't mean to sound rude or mean to rush you or anything, but I was wondering when you'd be done with my kiriban. I understand if you're busy and whatnot so I'm not fustrated nor mad in any way, but I have been waiting for a long while now, as you should know. Just wanted to mention this in case you might have accidently forgotten for some reason. Once again, I'm not mad and I'm not trying to rush you and I completely understand if you're having trouble with time management, but I'd really appreciate it if you would kindly finish it soon. K, thanks! :3

Yes I do need help. You said a couple months ago that you'd describe the pose you wanted, but you never did.

Wha-huh? But I did! I thought I gave you a description of what I wanted in a note. And didn't you also ask me this on YIM? Perhaps you should check the message archives? If, however, you do appear to be correct, then I'll later send a note of a description. If this is my fault, I'm terribly sorry.

This is incredible! The details, the anatomy, the coloring-! Wow. Just wow.
My favorite parts are the mother dragon's facial expression and the background. But really, I admire the entire piece. Way to go!

Nice title. It sounds like some spiffy Nintendo game.
When I first looked at this I was like," Whoa. I didn't know the mother dragon had that drastic shadow on her." But then I read your description and I was just like,"Whoa. You suck."

There's no way that many eggs came from one dragon. o..O That would be one bitch of a pregnancy... Beautiful job though! It's so rare I see new artwork from you but I love it when I do... It's always great!

Gwydd In reply to DracoSilverscar [2005-10-10 19:00:43 +0000 UTC]
The eggs aren't very big, though. For a size comparison, look at the barely-visible blue dragonling that's touching the mother's right front leg. I'd imagine that the eggs aren't too much bigger than that dragonling (and the dragonling looks larger than it is because of its wings), though the eggs larger because of the perspective I used.
Heh, yeah it is rare to see new art from me. I draw a lot, but only about 1% of the things I draw are good/clean/finished enough to be uploaded here. It's quite sad and pathetic, really.

If you're going to eat the dragons, you'd better start with the mother. She'd eat you if you tried to eat one of her dragonlings first... Actually, that'd be pretty funny. Go right on ahead.
It took a lot to get the colors that smooth, so I appreciate that you noticed them!

Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to end up taking this version down and replacing it with a photo that's hopefully of higher quality sometime in the next few days... Unless, of course, the photo actually turns out worse than this. Then I'll accept your offer.
