Every read the Lensmen books? They had a formation called "The cylinder" They would arrange their forces in that manner, then charge at and through the enemy forces. While the enemy was trying to turn and purse, they would stop, turn 180 and go back the other way through them. They would keep going back and forth until the enemy was destroyed.
