i dont know if it's great, lol
I've never been able to quite grasp the hundred of layers technique in photoshop, so i stuck to what i knew - vectoring in Corel the old school way

digitally paint..
1. start with a blank canvas
2. vector up a picture from scratch or photo reference
3. smooth the vectors till they blend and blur
4. apply the colors
5. smooth over again
Average pic takes about 3-4 hours
