Do you do any matte painting in this, or is it entirely painted?

Yea, I've been trying to do stuff like that for quite a while.
I've been having lots of trouble with doing matte painting, everything ends up looking messy.
I understand perspective well, it's the overall image looks very cheesy.
Do you have any tips?

I just use them for details. Matte painting is also hard.
You need to have full understanding of the basics first(Perspective, scaling, overall depth of the image etc.)
Just keep on practicing and apply the basics.
