In ancient Rome, human life was highly valued and each person was treated fairly according to their usefulness to society.
When it came to slaves, it was no different. The handsome and docile were given light tasks within the comfort and luxury of the Villa, the intelligent could become administrative assistants or tutors of the young domini and dominae, the rude and dumb were left with the manual work and the rebels, insubmissives and fugitives were sent to the mines
For each one a task according to his natural talent. Here we see a caravan of slaves of the latter category being sent to the salt mines, an arduous but noble task to maintain the wealth of the Roman empire.
For those who weren't even fit for the mines, there was always the cross to hang on it. Someone who dies to serve as an example to others is also useful. As already said, no human waste at all.
