...we arrived at the courtyard of the abbey. You could tell that this place was once teaming with life, but no longer. There was no vegetation at all, even the sound of birds chirping was eerily missing. In the center of the courtyard was a fountain filled with a strange red liquid, almost cranberry in color. Ellie, ever curious, approached the fountain and gazed into the shimmering pool. As she leaned forward a jet of water thrust upwards into her face causing her to fall back.
I quickly ran to her to see if she was ok. As I helped her up something odd started to happen. Her eyes, which were normally a very lively shade of green had begun to turn red in appearance.
Before I could say something Ellie started to scream as if she was being attacked, or was in severe pain. Not knowing what was happening or what to do, I quickly put my arms around her, holding her tightly in the hopes my presence would some how ease her suffering. She quickly calmed from the initial shock of whatever had over come her. I told her that everything was going to be ok, and in so doing I glanced over towards the fountain for some sort of clue as to what happened. There were words carved into the stones the made up the side of the fountain that read, "veda l'estremità come la credete per essere", though I could not understand what it meant.
"John", I heard in a soft voice. I turned back to Ellie, surprised to see that her eyes had returned to normal and she was no longer in any sort of distress save a few tears which were trickling down her face. I asked what had happened and if she was ok. She threw her arms around me, "I am now" she said, while she continued to cry.

It wasn't until later that Ellie told me what had happened to her. After she was splashed by the fountain she said she awoke in the same courtyard, but that everything was different. The grass was green, there were flowers of every color you could imagine, and you could even hear birds in the distance. She told me how she turned around and I wasn't there. Suddenly, everything in the courtyard turned black and started to die. Being afraid of what was happening, she told me how she started to scream. As she turned around to the fountain again she said she saw herself. Not her reflection in that strange red liquid which filled the fountain, but HERSELF, standing right in front of her. As she reached out to touch the thing in front of her that by appearance was her, the other her suddenly sprouted wings like an angel. She said that she quickly pulled back, and as she did could hear a voice begin to speak. The voice she said, sounded exactly like her own except that it was not her own. The voice simply said "So Alone", would pause for a second, then again would say "So Alone".
As she heard this, the person before her slowly started to age. She watched as the other her slowly got older and older. The feathers from the angel wings turned gray and one by one began to fall off. It was then she said she began to cry, though she was unsure why exactly... and as she did the image of herself fell to the ground and turned to dust. And in the distance the voice said "It's not too late". Just then there was a blinding flash of light from the fountain, and that is when Ellie said she awoke to find me holding her...
