Description
When I want to create an artwork, I immediately think of using charcoal because I want to create an atmosphere where I feel like myself; the messiness my room gets and the dirtiness of charcoal on my hands speak for that. This atmosphere allows me to give the best I can to my work. Charcoal allows me to control how textured my work looks.I used a technique I learnt a while ago in which I make spontaneous lines using a charcoal stick on a paper to create a foundation for my drawing. Afterwards, I cover some parts of these lines using a scotch tape. I made sure that the placement of the tapes is off-centered in a way that guides the viewer’s eyes. Then comes my favorite part where I smudge the lines pretending like the tapes do not exist, using a palette knife covered with a sponge to smudge the lines.
To add more contrast, I used compressed charcoal to finish off my drawing and added more details, in addition to using an eraser to establish the highlighted areas. Once finished, I removed the tapes to allow the depth of the drawing to be noticeable.
The two forms drawn, which are the rendered form, and the harsh lines form underneath it, push the viewer to formulate an understanding about mixed feelings once an individual experiences a change in life. It is just another reminder of how complicated the human being is; nobody can really see what lies underneath the skin of another person. The spontaneous lines represent how complex our feelings are when we are lost for words to explain how we feel and what we want, these feelings can somehow reflect on our actions or goals in life. An individual can either approach or avoid them. It is the part that can never be transmitted or felt by anyone else.
The rendered soft form, however, represents the part which can be seen by other individuals; it is their outside appearance which is employed to allow others to recognize you. I believe that what we feel inside can reflect on our appearances. Some moods can affect our skin, weight, or attitude which I tried to depict when I made this artwork. The viewer cannot clearly see the facial features of the portrait, it can only give a hint that it is a face. The brain can sometimes interpret information from seeing another’s face or staring long enough to decrypt their emotions. However, the brain can’t feel what others feel.
As person who experienced generalized anxiety, it was difficult for me to express how I was feeling to others, and this piece means a lot to me since my work is basically a transmission of feelings and thoughts. The two forms created represented me in some periods of my life. These two forms sometimes are not highly valued and I wanted others to pay more attention to them.
