In the visualization panel of the particles settings, turn "Render: " to at least 3.
That's the only thing I can think of at the moment.

Neat, I forgot that blender added a particle type for hair a while ago

No. Although with a hair particle system, you can set the visualization to Object and link it to a strand-like mesh. I tried this once and it required a bit of tweaking to get the rotations right, and with all that geometry it does get a bit slow.

Yes indeed! I must comment on the layout. Putting black text on a grey background was a very wise choice. It is very comfortable for the eyes. It is also quite easy to follow though I doubt that beginners will know what AAO stands for. Perhaps this tutorial isn't aimed at them. It is a very good tutorial for people with a little Blender knowledge.

Yeah, I based it off of Blender's wonderful colour scheme.
I did kind of assume that most would know what AAO was, but if it becomes a problem I'll be sure to change it.
