Wow, that's a stunning photo and your words match it well, how it's only perfect until people actually want to use the stuff.

He has more photos, (he was a photography store owner in later life) but this one really summed it up for me. I marvel at how astute he was to capture this moment, because I am sure that not many people did. It was just a part of life to them, and he saw it. Really saw it - and I wonder if he had the same thoughts that I had when he took the photograph and I marvel at how it punches me so many years later - and to realize that those barracks are now gone.
Those men were so young and full of life as well, to quote their graduating book,
The shake-down cruise is over. Yeah fellows, we're ready for the Navy, the real Navy; ready for the sea-weed, the pitch and the toss, the brine, the life of a man.
there is something sad about reading that.

He certainly had a good eye for a photo, and I'd say that it was a good thing he took the photos as it gives us something to think about, now that it's all starting to fade into the distant past. It really brings it home that real people were involved and that's something that shouldn't be forgotten.
It's amazing how quickly buildings like the barracks seem to get pulled down too, some of the school buildings I spent a couple of years of my life visiting when I was ten/eleven are now long gone and that was only twenty five years ago.

I think it is a beautiful photo, his widow had it in an old box - and she was going to throw it away along with his scrapbook of memories. I am supposed to try and sell the post cards on eBay. It seems sad to me that memories lovingly collected to be passed on can be tossed so callously.

Aye, I had a similar experience after my grandparents died, I ended up rescuing a few things that were just going to be binned including three sketches my Grandad drew while serving in India during the Second World War. I had to dig them out after seeing your picture too
