im glad youre ok with him talking to a fairy that lives inside him when he's not talking to her, on a quest to defeat a giant amoeba monster to wake up the magical sage and get the water seal to move onto the next level and magicaly refill the lake, but a magic tunic is out of the question. lol

In Twilight Princess, the way it works is shown. When Link submerges himself in water, a mask is pulled up to cover everything from the nose down. Meaning, Link will breath through the mask, which, I think are probably made FROM Zora gills, theoretically seperating the oxygen from the water everytime he breaths. In normal fish, gills extracts the oxygen in water to an absorbable amount in the blood..Basically, they seperate the O in H2O.

since when you go under water a mask covers his mouth making it so when water passes through it, it becomes air for link.

Well, in Zelda Twilight Princess I think you have this thing over your mouth and nose when you're underwater. Of course, it was my brother who played it so I don't really remember.
Plus, it's magic, so there.
