Wow, I wish to start creating ball jointed dolls, I've already bought a clay called La Doll. Have you got any tips or advice?

Do you recommend using same clay as for sculpting the doll to make the ball joints? I worked with this kind of clay before in much smaller pieces but I'm not sure if they won't break or wear easy so I'm analizing the posibility of using wood ball joints and then after casting, no problem

Thank you!
In my case, the ball is made from the same clay as the body.
Because, it is easier than other materials.
Other materials are difficult to make.
Moreover, I want to assimilate parts and a ball.

I am looking at the process for Doll #4
I am very impressed with your technique.
I have many questions:
Why remove the polystyrene cores?
Are you using a ceramic clay, a self-curing "sculpey" type of clay, or a self-curing material like plaster?
can this technique be used to make a doll with some articulation in the waist?

Thank you!
1.remove the polystyrene cores
Please check the figure of the link.
Rubber goes in a doll and ties each part.

2.About Clay
I use PADICO LaDoll.
Link: [link]
It is a kind of the stone clay, standard at BJD-DIY in Japan.
This is the clay which pulp and adhesive were mixed in based on the
powder of the stone.(It is lower strength than the cast.)
It is suitable for a doll so that a name shows.
When this clay dries, it becomes hard more than paper clay.
But, this clay is not suitable for a thin body and is not suitable to playing doll.
3.Joint of the waist
A waist and the abdominal joint are general way.
However, I do not use it because a line of the body is spoiled.

Because tension rubber goes in the body of the doll,
we must make it hollow.
Each part is connected by receiving tension of the rubber with a ball.
A part lightens, and joint becomes flexible.

It was a mistake.

What materials do you use? I have begun making a ball jointed doll but I am not satisfied with my materials - styrofoam as the temporary core, then air-drying clay for the body, and gesso/acrylic paint for the finish. The styrofoam is very difficult to carve because of its large grain. Do you use a mould or do you sculpt your dolls around a foam frame as well?

Thank you for your comment.
I use Styrofoam for the core, too.
I think that the Styrofoam is difficult as you say.
Therefore,I only cut it roughly.
There is the image of the core which I used for this doll in the following link.
My Home Page 1 --> [link]
My Home Page 2 --> [link]
The foot does not put a core.
The hand uses wire for a bone..
For ground coating materials, I used Japanese traditional material "tonoko" not gesso.
But , I think "TONOKO" to be not different in effect in gesso.
The finish painting of this doll used an acrylic and oil painting.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the advice - I love ball jointed dolls and hope to make many in the future.
I'll send you a link once I've posted mine - it probably won't be finished until next year.

You're welcome!
If you have any questions, please ask me.
But please do not forget that I am a beginner , too .
As for me, the doll which I made for the first time became a special.
Perhaps you will be so, too.
Good Luck!
