I find Kokona-chan's story very sad. A highschool student struggling with the loss of her mother and then her father goes into massive debt to keep her in school. She feels like she has no choice but to engage in compensated dating...
Then a ridiculously jealous Yandere will use this information to make Kokona a social pariah until she can't come to school because the bullying becomes so bad, and we all know where that will probably lead in the final game. Or a Yandere will frame her until she get's expelled her future ruined.
Ouch, I have eternal sympathy for Kokona.

Agreed... Β That's why Kokona's a fan favorite, her story is just so sad... She deserves so much better, especially with how nice she can be towards others (eg friendship route)

Agreed, I'd much rather do the friendship arc to get her out of that situation than pair her off with Riku. Yes, that ends up giving Musume some trauma and I don't think of her as a bad person because of what her father does, saving Kokona and her father from the crushing debt and presence of the Loan Sharks is definitely the better way to go. And it just goes to show that Yandere Dev isn't afraid of having serious issues in the game and that most likely all the rivals (or at least most of them) could have stories like this to keep you from killing them. For example perhaps Osoro or Oka comes from an abusive home nad the friendship route is trying to get them help or Megami being close to snapping because of all the pressure she's being put under. There's already some of this brewing with Osana, who's most likely being stalked by an older man who isn't taking no for an answer. That's probably going to be one of the best things about the game; the diverse story.
Yeah, Kokona is already one of my favorite characters, only rivaled by (punz) Osoro, Oka, and Midori.

Riku comes from a rich family as stated in his student profile, and according to YandereDev's Reddit post is that his personal headcanon is that shortly after Kokona and Riku begin dating, Kokona tells Riku about her father's debt problems, and Riku pays off the debt.
YandereDev stated this as his headcanon because he also said that the player will never see it in-game.
Either way, I think both options are equally good endings for her.
