This is a really good picture just really captavating. As im new to the whole photography thing. I was just wondering what you feel is the best way to achieve a picture like this. By that i mean one with something in white or colour surrounded by black. I feel pictures like that just look awesome.

What I did was used a black backdrop, a bed sheet actually (doesn't have to be anything fancy). I shot the photo with the natural night coming through a window, which illuminated my face this way. My hair was dark at the time so it blended nicely with the backdrop once I turned it into a black and white photo and increased the contrast a bit

We are not looking at the picture, the picture is looking at us.
The fact it is a self portrait makes it all the more impresive to get this feeling.
I can only imagine it must take many attempts to ensure the lighting, framing and focus are right when you can't look down the view finder. Definately worth it though for this picture.
