Meet me in winter
when your skin turns as pale as mine
when the water takes whole minutes to warm in the pipes
when trees stand like naked sketches against the stark colourless sky

Meet me in winter
when I hug the ancient tinny heater between my knees as I work
when I live off soup, pasta and dahl, eating them so fresh from the stove that I burn my lips
when I wrap myself in layers of wool so that even your deft fingers cannot find flesh

Meet me in winter
and we shall wonder together at the dedication of the early-morning joggers, swimmers and cyclists
at the way the grass crunches under our shoes and at the fluffy winter coats of horses and dogs
at the fact that my little car's heater still works

Meet me in winter, my love
and we shall while away the months together
