Description Water, its the stuff of life.

--

3DSMax and PS as usual, the ice terrain was rendered with subsurface scattering, extremely processor intensive but well worth it. With global radiosity for added realism.

The planets maps were done in PS and rendered within the same scene in Max, the shaded lower half of the planet is actually picking up light from the terrain because of where it was actually placed in the scene, though if i got everything right it should look further out in this finished version.

Actual size 3840x1200.

I did pieces of it over months so cant really say for sure, but i would estimate around 30 or so hours overall.

Now this is true beauty, such a rare sight to see icey planets like pluto have enough light to reflect light like this yet still still cold enough to keep its icey landscape.

The rainbow really sets this off, I wonder if this could be close to realty on one of the icy moons we have even in our own solar system.

Don't need clouds, just water/glass/crystal for the light to pass through and bend

Don't get me wrong, you're the top artist here and I don't want to claim I know what's best I just would like to see the snow mountains in a distance blur focusing on the heavens

The effects of sub-surface scattering is really noticable on the left Usually it works bette ron smaller-scale stuff but you managed to make it work for a terrain (unles sof course it's small and just looks huge ) I think I'd use it too if I did an ice-planet scene, but yeah - SSS renders ridiculously slow

The planet picking up reflected light actually works in favour for this bright, fantasy-like scene But if you don't want that I'd suggest having no infinite planes or infinite terrains in the scene. Reducing the "ambient" of the planet's material from the default 40% to 0% or even just render it in an empty space scene seperatly and imposing it in later. That's usually what I do
