This is my submission for the ACC's summer contest... but I'd really appreciate everyone's critique on it before I finish it (cuz it's really hard to touch it up once I start colouring or shading). Any comments would be really appreciated, as it can only improve this piece, and my work in general

Edit (July 29, 2005): I added in the background - which is pretty much a first for me lol... and I changed the balloon (thx Gaian)

Edit (August 8, 2005): I coloured the pic and used photoshop to make the pic look like a physical picture (cuz that's one of the requirments in the contest) and would appreciate any final critiques before I do a final submission.

Story Behind the Picture:
When I first saw that the ACC was holding a contest that would have to feature a family, I was thrilled, as it is a topic that I have not really worked with in the past. I had a mental sketch of what I wanted the family to be like almost immediately, and set to work on the real thing. The obstacle came with a theme and along with that - a background (as I do not put backgrounds in my pictures). The reason I do not place backgrounds in my pics is not because I do not like them - I really love them - but my mind wanders too easily with a pencil in my hand, and it's all I can do to finish a pic I start before I'm on to the next one ^-^. Consequently, I was kind of worried about how the background in this pic would turn out (due to my inexperience). The inspiration for it hit me like a tonne of bricks - as I was telling myself I had to make a background for this picture, I started to remember all the times my parents had taken me and my siblings to the forestry farm in the city closest to us. This zoo that showed off alot of the local wildlife was always an enjoyable experience, and I would take hours walking through it to pour over each and every animal. And what really makes it perfect for this subject, is that a photograph is taken to preserve a memory, and I have locked some of my own into this picture. The family within the "photo" was drawn without anyone in particular in mind, and then my boyfriend pointed out that the couple resembled us. So perhaps this is a picture not to preserve the past - but to predict my future ^-^

Time: 7 hours
Drawing: 1 1/2 hours (people)
1 hour (background)
Colouring: 2 hours (background)
2 1/2 hours (people & lining)
Photoshop (to add white border and resize): 10 minutes
