Description
As I moved through the concourse of the busy airport on my way home from Pine Hills, I was a bit overwhelmed at the sea of humanity around me. Amid the hustle and bustle, I realized I had become accustomed to the laid back, small town atmosphere of Pine Hills. But it was good to be home and I knew the city life, deep down, was the one for me. I would adjust soon. My thoughts turned to seeing Master , Vicky and the other Company sisters back at HQ who I had missed. But my glowing pink eyes frowned a bit. A small sense of guilt continued to gnaw at me that I had not done anything nice for Raven to show my appreciation for all of her hospitality while I was in Pine Hills. I owed her so much. She even gave me a VR visor with the imperfect program installed on it as a parting gift, and I had shamefully given her nothing in return. But a last minute reactionary gift from some department store or Goth boutique just wouldn't have done my sense of gratitude to her proper justice. I would have to find something appropriate and send it to her. Something fitting, something useful, something that would remind her of me. I would focus on this as soon as I got back to the office, I thought.
Moving through the baggage claim and ground transportation area, amidst the chaos and cacophony of excited families calling to one another, pissed off people complaining about the airlines and babies crying, a melody caught my ears. Faint at first, but it was unmistakably the sound of a violin in the distance. It was only an echo at first, coming from another area of the terminal. My former self was a bit of an amateur musician and I was always a sucker for watching street musicians. I could not see the player but the echo of the music drew me closer as I diverted my path from the exit toward the melody. The company car waiting to take me back to HQ could stand by for a few more minutes, I thought, while I indulged myself and set about finding the source of the music.
My ears led me onward toward the sound. Moving through the horde of people, I began to recognize the familiar tune echoing off the concrete floors and voluminous ceiling. Yes, it sounded … Irish ... an old folk tune. Could it be? Yes! It was “Londonderry Air,” more commonly known as “Danny Boy,” Mmmm…one of my very favorite tunes from my old life! As a girl who formerly identified as being of Irish descent, I usually couldn’t help myself from tearing up when the arrangement was good and the musician playing it knew what they were doing.
I couldn’t see the musician but the sound of the crowd started to disappear around me as my ears focused purely on the music. The dynamics rose and fell - growing louder, then softer at just the right points. I heard elaborate ornamentation as the violinist toyed with the melody. So good. The vibrato they demonstrated showed the Hallmark of a classically trained musician. Moving more deliberately through the crowd. The violinist modulated the key signature up a half-step with each phrase for added emotional effect, the last one sending a chill through me. Wow, this violinist was a true virtuoso. I had to see them!
I moved around a group of older businessmen in suits. Shuffling around them, my eyes fell upon her, completely captivated by her beauty and her music. She was young, blonde woman, dressed in a tied off t-shirt and jeans. The beauty of her soft face falling on my eyes matched the beautiful music falling upon my ears. Her eyes were closed in concentration as she stood and played so confidently for the travelers coming and going. She swayed along with the music wiith an otherworldly grace.
There were no visors, no mantras, no deliberate attempts at mind control, but I was completely hypnotized by the haunting melody. I sank down onto a nearby bench and watched her as if she was on stage and I, her biggest fan. My eyes closed as the music filled my heart with a mixture of joy and sadness, as the tune was meant to be experienced. With another emotional half-step modulation and a slow retard, my eyes closed and I began singing the lyrics of the final phrase softly aloud...
“For you will bend … and tell me that you love me….
And I shall sleep in peace …
until … you ... come …to …me.”
Another wave of chills ran through me with tears falling from both of my glowing eyes as her bow rose from the strings.
