do you think i can get this same detail using a 2x teleconverter on an 80-300? or should i spend the extra money and get a 600mm telephoto?

I think as much you can use the bare lens it will much better, if you can afford that 600 then it will be the best thing to do, if not then try 300 f.8 with 2x, don't use 2x with zooms at all, zooms itself sometimes can't be sharp enough, how come with teleconverters it will be sharper then? I don't feel satisfed with those shots taken by 100-400L that much and still i am thinking to get longer primes, but i saw someone used 500 [with and with TC] and Sigmonster [sigma 300-800 with and with TC] on 350D or 20D and he got so Damn sharp clear shots of the moon, so i don't advise you to use 80-300 at all with TC.
