He works as a janitor because Wonka doesn't trust him with anything else. He's also under strict control which bars him from rooms accessed during the factory tour.

No one really knows what Mike is, but he calls himself an apparition. He's oddly carefree after the incident. He is a physical being, he's just able to manipulate his "physicalness" to a certain extent. After coming out of the taffy puller he was 10 feet tall and paper thin. However in the weeks following he shrunk down to 8 feet.

His memory is a bit foggy after coming out of the television. It seems he can't even remember the names of his parents.
