TWO YEARS AGORivers turned to Kai and ushered him to the front door. He knew he just lost Ash forever. Nothing he could do about it, other than accept the consequences.
“Da? Where you going? Why you sad?” Dart just had to come back home as Rivers and Kai were leaving. “Who that?” He tilted his head, pointing a hoof towards Kai.
A pain shot through Rivers' heart. How could he explain this to his son? His… son. Man, he was stupid. More than stupid.
“Da did a bad thing, sugarbug… I hurt Papa, so I’m going away for a while.” He felt his smile start to falter. Ash had come to linger in the doorway, face void of any emotion.
“Come inside, Dart. Smokey wants to see you, kiddo. Say bye to Da.”
Dart didn’t say anything as he looked between his parents… Something was wrong. He didn’t like it. He gave Rivers a long hug before going inside. “Bye, Da…”
Once he was out of earshot, Ash snarled and flattened his ears.
“The second you stop trying, you will never see him again.”
And the door shut.
Kai kicked the ground, staying quiet. That was… something. He felt awful. If he had known Rivers was married, and had a KID, he never would’ve… you know.
“I need a place to stay. Just for a little while, until this gets sorted.” Rivers coughed.
